🎷 Third graders are learning about instruments of the orchestra and the specific families these instruments belong in. Right now we are focusing on the woodwind family. Students learned which instruments belong in the woodwind family and the similarities and characteristics they share. 🚒 Yesterday, our South Fire District Firefighters came to visit Farm Hill! Every October, during Fire Prevention Month, the firefighters come to Farm Hill to teach and review with our students, the importance of Fire Safety and making sure they know what to do should a fire ever occur in their home.

One of the biggest topics discussed is having a plan, knowing what to do, and what not to do when there is a fire. They even have the firefighters dress up in all their gear so that the students know what the Firefighters look like when they are performing their jobs.

Be sure to ask your child what their plan is, should a fire ever occur!

👟We just finished our cooperative games fall unit where students were involved in a very active, strategy oriented game. The game works on the skills of throwing at targets, cardiovascular endurance, communication and team play.

Our daily warm up consists of a workout routine focusing on our 4 fitness testing components of Flexibility- sit and reach, cardiovascular endurance- pacer test, muscular strength- push ups and muscular endurance- curl-ups.We have entered our nitro all unit, where students work in pairs in a tennis/volleying off the ground game.

Our warm-up challenge is a relay race focusing on the fitness test of curl-ups. Working to strengthen our core muscles of our abdominals (see videos).

In October we will be entering our soccer skills/ fitness unit. Stay Healthy!:

🚤 Over the course of the last couple of weeks, each of our Fifth Grade classrooms went on a Field Trip to the Connecticut River Museum. These trips are not just our Farm Hill students, but include students from other classrooms across the state. Farm Hill 5th was once again given the opportunity to participate in the Reaching Beyond the Classroom Grant where classes from different schools are partnered up with another class from another school in the state. Together, throughout the whole school year, these classes will go on field trips to various locations, often taking part in hands on experiments and experiences, that support our fifth grade curriculum.

This particular trip to the CT River Museum included both a classroom experience where students used the Scientific Design Process to clean up their "River in a Jar" from pollutants that are in the CT River. Additionally, students were able to board the RiverQuest boat and take a trip up the CT River, observing the habitats and ecosystems of many living things in and along the river. So many Bald Eagles were seen on our trips!

Reaching Beyond the Classroom (https://reachingbeyondtheclassroom.org/student-programs) is an organization that helps bring together students from Hartford, Middletown, Andover, Scotland, and Sprague. The students thoroughly enjoyed this experience, connecting with students from another school and learning more about Science as it relates to our very own CT River!
