250 years ago this evening, the Sons of Liberty in Lyme Connecticut burned 100 wt of tea being peddled by one William Lamson of Martha’s Vineyard believing it to be “some of the detestable tea lately landed at Cape Cod.” All of the tea was burned and its ashes buried “in testimony of their utter abhorrence of all tea subject to a duty for the purpose of raising revenue in America.” This song was written in commemoration of a similar event that took place in Boston Harbor three months earlier.
