🇺🇸 🇺🇸 🇺🇸 Today, the New Jersey Family History Institute remembers Major Harold Geiger from East Orange, New Jersey. Harold graduated from the United States Military Academy in 1908. He became the twentieth United States Army officer to be assigned to aviation duty, and was rated as a military aviator. In 1913 and 1914, Harold established and commanded the first flying station in Honolulu, Hawaii. From 1920 to 1921, he commanded the Army Balloon School at Ross Field, California. In 1926, he was appointed Commanding Officer of Phillips Field at Aberdeen Proving Ground in Maryland.

Harold was involved in several aviation accidents. In 1912, a "hydro-aeroplane" that he was flying in plunged from a distance of 100 feet into the Potomac River in Washington D.C. as a result of a gust of wind that disabled the aircraft’s wings. Harold and another aviator survived and were rescued from the water. In 1926, while attending the Air Corps Tactical School at Langley Field, Harold was injured when his aircraft collided mid-air with another student’s aircraft. Both pilots used parachutes and landed without injuries. Harold was killed on May 17, 1927 in a take-off accident at the Middletown Air Depot in Pennsylvania. While flying a DH-4 aircraft, he was forced to land, and rather than landing straight ahead where several men were working, he attempted to turn the aircraft and crashed.

Harold was buried at Arlington National Cemetery in Arlington, Virginia. He was posthumously promoted to Lieutenant Colonel. “Geiger Field,” an Army air base named after Harold, was built in 1941 in Spokane, Washington, and was used a service station for air traffic traveling between Alaska and the continental United States during World War II. Today, Spokane International Airport occupies that site, and is designated with the airport code GEG in Harold’s memory.

Q: What is a genealogy practicum?

A: A genealogy practicum is designed to provide students with practical experience researching, analyzing findings, and developing a conclusion. In NJFHI’s New Jersey Advanced Genealogy Research Practicum, the cases presented allow you to learn research strategies and acquire research skills by working through several challenging New Jersey research problems in a New Jersey family over several generations. The instructor will be available for guidance and assistance along the way, and will also provide encouraging hints as you progress through your research on the case. 🚨 NEW COURSE! The New Jersey Family History Institute will present a 5-day virtual course, Evidence-Based Writing for Genealogists, presented by Melissa Johnson, CG. The course will take place over five consecutive Fridays in September (September 1, 8, 15, 22 & 29).

Genealogists taking this course will learn the skills and strategies needed to present complex evidence in writing. The course will focus on creating quality genealogical work products, including proof arguments, genealogical compilations (narratives, pedigrees and lineages) and research reports. The course will cover the genealogical writers’ market, writing practices specific to the genealogy field, preparation, outlining and strategizing, writing prompts and practices, documentation, use of DNA evidence, writing key genealogical work products, using historical context in writing, publishing considerations, editing, and technology tools for genealogical writing.

🚨 NEW COURSE! The New Jersey Family History Institute will be holding the first-ever New Jersey Advanced Genealogy Research Practicum.

Students will address challenging research problems for one New Jersey family through several generations. Each week, the instructor will present a new research goal. Students will have one week to conduct research and present their findings. The class will discuss the approach and resolution to each case.

You do not need to be located in New Jersey to take this Practicum. All sessions will take place on Zoom, and will be recorded and made available for attendees who cannot join live on Saturday mornings.
