A Better Way to Get Your Captain’s License
By Capt. Kent Dresser
Please stop memorizing questions and answers.
Seriously.
If you want to get your captain’s license, your goal should not be to cram enough Coast Guard test questions into your short-term memory to squeak through an exam. Your goal should be to understand the material, pass the exam, and step aboard a boat knowing that you are prepared to accept responsibility for the people who trust you.
Passing matters. Of course it does. But passing and learning are not the same thing. Yet, the maritime training industry has spent decades pretending they are.
When I prepared for my first captain’s license in the early 1990s, the (not so) hot study technology was a 3.5-inch floppy disk.
For anyone under 40, a floppy disk was a little square piece of plastic that held an astonishing 1.44 megabytes of data. That is not a typo. Today, a single photograph from your phone would bully it right out of the room.
The disk contained Coast Guard questions and answers. You put it into a computer and worked through the question bank until the correct choices became familiar. The system was not designed to help you understand why an answer was correct. It was designed to help you recognize the answer when you saw it again.
At the school, the coffee came out of a vending machine. You fed it coins, listened to a paper cup drop into place, and hoped the brown liquid that followed was technically coffee. Ci******es were common. The 3.5-inch floppy disk was in charge of everything.
That was more than 30 years ago.
Ci******es are no longer popular.
The coffee vending machine is gone.
The floppy disk is a museum piece.
Yet people are still being told to prepare for a USCG captain’s license exam by memorizing questions and answers like it is 1990!!
Join me in 2026!
Knowing the answer is not the same as knowing what to do and how to do it!
Memorizing an answer can help you pass a question you have seen before. It does not prepare you for a question that is worded differently. More importantly, it does not prepare you for the moment when the “question” is a vessel crossing ahead of you in reduced visibility, a passenger who suddenly becomes ill, a dragging anchor at 2:00 a.m., or a navigation decision with no multiple-choice answers attached.
The water does not give you four choices.
No one wants to hear the captain say, “Hang on. I remember seeing this one. Was it B or C?”
A captain must understand the Rules of the Road, not merely recognize a familiar sentence about them. A captain must know how to work a chart problem, not hope the numbers resemble the practice problem. A captain must understand deck general, navigation, weather, safety, and vessel operations well enough to use that knowledge when the circumstances change.
That distinction matters whether you are pursuing a 6-pack captain’s license, a 25, 50, or 100 Ton Master license, or simply trying to understand how to get a captain’s license for the first time.
You are not collecting trivia. You are preparing to take command.
Memorization creates the most dangerous kind of confidence.
Look, there is nothing wrong with practice questions. We use them. Practice is essential.
The problem begins when the question bank becomes the curriculum.
If a learner sees the same question often enough, the answer starts to feel obvious. That feeling is seductive. It creates confidence without necessarily creating competence.
Change the wording, the numbers, the chart, or the circumstances, and the confidence disappears. The student did not learn the concept. The student learned the shape of the test.
That is not education. It is pattern recognition.
For a recreational certification, that might merely be disappointing. For a professional mariner responsible for passengers, crew, property, and the environment, it is not good enough.
A Better Way to Prepare for the Coast Guard Captain’s License Exam:
A strong USCG-approved captain’s license course should do three things in the right order:
Teach the concept clearly.
Show how the concept works aboard an actual vessel.
Use practice questions to confirm understanding and prepare you for the exam.
That order matters.
First, you learn why. Then you learn how. Finally, you prove that you can apply it.
Practice questions should be diagnostic. When you miss one, the course should help you identify what you do not yet understand. When you get one right, you should be able to explain why it is right and why the other choices are wrong.
That takes more effort than memorizing an answer key. It also produces something considerably more valuable: knowledge you can use.
Online Captain’s License Training Should Be Better, Not Just More Convenient
An online captain’s license course gives working mariners something the old classroom model rarely could: the ability to study when and where real life permits.
That flexibility is powerful. It can also become an excuse for weak course design.
Putting a question bank on a modern learning platform does not make it modern education. A digital flash card is still a flash card. A slick website does not fix a bad teaching model.
Good online USCG captain’s license courses should:
-break difficult material into manageable lessons
-explain it in plain language
-connect it to real operations
-measure genuine understanding
-provide access to an experienced professional when a learner gets stuck.
Online should mean flexible. It should not mean alone.
At Confident Captain, our courses are built by professional captains and maritime subject matter experts. We teach the material, prepare you for the test, and help you understand what the license represents. You are not buying access to a pile of questions from a marketing company. You are learning from people who have made real decisions on real boats with real consequences.
There is a difference.
What Should You Look for in a Captain’s License Course?
If you are comparing captain’s license courses, do not ask only, “Will this help me pass?” Ask better questions:
-Does the course explain why an answer is correct?
-Does it teach concepts before drilling practice questions?
-Was the course designed by experienced professional mariners?
-Can I get help from a knowledgeable instructor?
-Will I understand how the material applies on the water?
-Does the training prepare me for responsibility, not just an exam?
A high pass rate is important. So is what remains in your head after the exam.
The best captain’s license course should give you both.
Do You Have to Memorize Anything for a Captain’s License?
Yes. Let’s not get silly.
Professional knowledge includes facts, definitions, lights, shapes, sound signals, formulas, and rules that you must know. Some information must become automatic.
But there is a major difference between learning essential maritime knowledge and memorizing that the answer to question number 47 is C.
One builds a professional foundation. The other builds dependence on seeing question number 47 again.
Memorize what a captain must know. Understand what a captain must do. Use practice questions to test both.
How to Get Your Captain’s License Without Living Like It Is 1990:
If you are ready to get your captain’s license online, choose a course that respects your time without insulting your intelligence.
Choose training that lets you work at your own pace but still expects you to learn. Choose instructors who have stood a watch, managed risk, carried passengers, handled emergencies, and accepted the responsibility that comes with command. Choose a US Coast Guard-approved captain’s license course that prepares you for the examination and the work that follows it.
The Coast Guard credential may fit in your pocket. The responsibility does not.
I have spent more than 30 years as a professional captain and more than two decades training mariners through Confident Captain. I have seen what happens when people understand their trade. I have also seen what happens when confidence gets ahead of competence.
You need to pass the test. We will help you do that.
But we are going to teach you something, too.
The ci******es are gone. The vending-machine coffee is gone. The 3.5-inch floppy disk is gone.
It is time to leave question-and-answer memorization in 1990 with the rest of them.
Learn the material.
Pass the exam.
Become a confident captain.
