What’s your favorite book you’ve read as part of the summer reading program?: Shutter by Ramona Emerson

What do you enjoy about the summer reading program?:
Honestly, I like that I feel like I have time to read something that's not "work related". Although,much like everything is political, everything I read seems like it's "work related!"

What was the last book that you couldn’t put down?:
Martyr!: A Novel by Kaveh Akbar

Lifetime learning continues for many of our employees at Laurel Ridge. In this 2024 from the college archives campus police sergeant Brian Higgins received his Small Unmanned Aircraft Systems Flight Operator certificate from college president Dr. Kimberly Blosser.

This week’s from the college archives looks back at our 2014 college 5K. Staff members Alex Burton and Angie Kaylor head toward the finish.

This year’s 5k will be very special for the memory of our dear friend, Alex.

Join us on Saturday, September 19, for our annual 5K Run/Walk, supporting the Recovery Connection Scholarship in honor of Alex Burton and the CHASE committee.

Register at laurelridge.edu/5k.

Entry Fees: Early registration price is $30. After Sept. 6 the registration cost is $35. No in-person race day registration will be available. $2 discount for Shenandoah Valley Runners members.

Awards: Awards will be given to the top three males and females in each age group.
Age Groups: 10 & under, 11-19, 20-29, 30-39, 40-49, 50-59, 60-69, 70+
Course Description: Multi-surface course on Laurel Ridge campus.
Amenities: Post-race refreshments, restrooms within the Student Union Building.
Parking: Free parking (look for directional/parking signs when entering campus)
No pets, strollers, or headphones.

Summer Reader: Maggie Bausch

What’s your favorite book you’ve read as part of the summer reading program?: Parable of the Sower by Octavia Butler. I put it down and immediately read the sequel.

What do you enjoy about the summer reading program?: The competition with coworkers, and the pizza at the end!

What was the last book that you couldn’t put down?:
I Have Some Questions For You by Rebecca Makkai. It';s an interesting take on the types of true crime stories that become popular, and how podcasts can alter the narrative.
