May is Mental Health Awareness Month, and in business, this isn’t a “nice to have,” it’s essential.
The way you lead, communicate, and make decisions is directly influenced by your mental and emotional state. Unmanaged stress shows up as: reactive decision-making, poor communication, burnout (for you and your team), lack of clarity and focus. Strong leadership isn’t just about performance; it’s about capacity.
When leaders prioritize their mental health, they: Respond instead of react,
Create psychological safety
Lead with clarity and intention
Build more sustainable, high-performing teams
This month, shift the question from:
“How do I get more done?” to:
“How do I lead in a way that’s sustainable for me and my team?”

May is Mental Health Awareness Month; reminder that how we feel matters just as much as what we do. We move through life managing responsibilities, showing up for others, and pushing forward, so often at the cost of our own internal state.
Mental health isn’t just about crisis, it’s about: How you respond to stress How safe you feel in your own body. How you speak to yourself when things get hard. Awareness is the first step. Not fixing, not forcing, just noticing.
Take a moment today to check in:
What do I actually need right now?
You’re allowed to slow down, reset, and take care of your mind the same way you would your body.

Set Boundaries: In firewalking, safety is paramount, emphasizing the necessity of boundaries. Similarly, for our emotional and mental health, it's essential to establish clear lines that protect our well-being. These boundaries serve as shields, guarding our energy and ensuring we're treated with respect.

This is more of a mortgage-specific tip. Deferred student loans do not hurt the credit score while deferred, but lenders still count a payment in debt to income (DTI) calculations (typically 0.5–1% of the balance per month depending on loan type).

The credit score and the mortgage qualification are two separate conversations.

Understanding both is key to preparing for homeownership.

Credit Karma and CreditWise are great apps to monitor credit information. However, their scoring model is a different scoring model. Credit Karma and Capital One's CreditWise both use VantageScore 3.0, which is a model developed by the three bureaus as a competitor to FICO.

The problem is that mortgage lenders use classic FICO scores, specifically FICO 2 (Experian), FICO 5 (Equifax), and FICO 4 (TransUnion). These models can produce meaningfully different numbers from the same credit data.

Know the difference—it matters.
