John's military service began with basic training at Ft. Dix, NJ. He continued to Ft. Ord, CA for his Advanced Infantry Training and was commissioned as a Second Lieutenant after his graduation from Officers' Candidate School (OCS) at Ft. Eustis, Virginia.

To my family that I have shared so much with; What moves through us is a silence, a quiet sadness, a longing for one more day, one more word, one more touch, we may not understand why you left this earth so soon, or why you left before we were ready to say good-bye, but little by little, we begin to remember not just that you died, but that you lived. And that your life gave us memories too beautiful to forget. John Harper loved life, loved people,loved children,loved serving not just his community and his family but his Country. He was a man of great spirit and of great love. The mark he left on many is indelible, as a teacher he changed the lives of countless people, as a father he changed the lives of his children as a husband he changed the life of Phyllis .. As my Father in Law he changed my life. I wish I had told him more how be inspired me, how he made me laugh ,how he made me feel pride by the pride he felt for his family.. how he inspired me to have more faith and to be spiritual. I wish I had a chance to say just I love you too him and he knew what I was saying .. but even though he couldn't express that he understood ..I know he knew the love we all had for him .. may you rest in peace now and share the rest of your journey with God our savior.. God Bless you and keep you safe till we all meet again.

Felicia, so sorry to hear about your Dad's passing. "Mr Harper" was someone I never forgot even now, some 30 plus years after he was my teacher. I'll never forget a story he once told me after I was habitually late to his class in 7th grade. He told about how when he was in the military everyone used to get up at the same time and it was a mad dash to the showers, etc. He said what he did was get up about a half an hour before the crowd and take his time getting everything organized and ready for the day. Side note - his class was my first of the day (maybe it was home room) so I would run into Thorne and right into his class. The story stuck with me because he was saying hey kid, don't be a bum and get up late and rush - get your act together! But he said it in such a way that I took it to heart and I wasn't late again - he taught me a life lesson. He was a class act and a great man. I'm sure there are thousands of stories like that one.
