If you are a teacher, know a teacher, have or work with children with or without learning disabilities, you have to read my novel, The Student.
On May 25, special education teacher, Sharon Bonavina wakes up in a cold sweat. It’s been just over a year since it happened, and she’s still grappling with the guilt that somehow it was all her fault. Desperate to find answers, the passionately dedicated teacher reads through her journal that documents the psychological battle that played out between her and her deeply troubled student. As The Student’s behavior escalated and enmeshed the entire school, the administration, hamstrung by the demands of the law and the Board, lurched from one failing solution to another. Meanwhile, Sharon sought to find the delicate balance necessary to respond to the Student’s behavior while addressing the complex needs of all her students, until forces beyond her control led inexorably to the events of the previous May. Was it her fault?
The Student is available for pre-sale on barnesandnoble.com, isbn: 9798881199791 or ebook if you can't wait, EAN number: 2940185615812

Virtual Schooling Tips 3
Parents: If You Feed Them, They Will Learn--(with apologies to the Field of Dreams.)
Make sure your child has a good breakfast. You can also bring a healthy snack into the room between breakfast and lunch to raise blood sugar levels (and attentiveness). Think carrot sticks, peanut butter & crackers, apple slices with or without cheese, hummus and veggies.

Kids: It's Soooooo Boring, I Can't Stay Focused!--
I know. Get up and out of your chair every 30 or 40 minutes. and stretch for 3-5 minutes. Make sure you do a few jumping jacks and forward bends to get the blood back into your brain, and crisscross your arms in front of your body to wake up both sides of your brain and get each side to communicate with the other. (Yes, it works and is based in neuroscience. It just sounds weird.)

Virtual Learning Tips 2
Students- Just because:
Just because the teacher isn't watching... Guess what, she's still grading you!
Just because no one else is doing it... You don't know that; you cant see them either. (Besides... that's a stupid excuse.)
Just because you don't understand the assignment... Ask for help. That's why we have email and parents!

Parents-"To be or not to be? That is the question."
Be a parent, not a friend, and not just the breadwinner. Set high but reasonable expectations for student achievement and monitor their work.
For K-2, check in every 10 minutes & give stickers for work well done.
For Grades 3-5, check in every 20-30 minutes and hand out stickers or tangible rewards.
For Grades 6 and up, check randomly throughout the day (2-4 times). No stickers needed, but sincere words of praise and time with you is a great reward.
