Lifestyle Medicine Interest Group will be holding a garden clean up on Monday 4/4. The event will last from 12-6 and is a TOUCH eligible event! The weather is supposed to be warmer and sunny, so it will be a great opportunity to get some outdoors time too. You are welcome to bring work gloves, but everything else will be provided to you. We will be clearing out the garden, repainting benches/tables, fixing garden beds, weeding, mulching, and preparing the garden for planting next month. If you have any questions you can email Andrew Bertollo ([email protected]). Look forward to seeing you there!

Despite the extensive evidence of the many health benefits regular physical activity and exercise provide, the CDC estimates that only about 1 in 5 U.S. adults are currently meeting the established physical activity guidelines. As professionals, what can we do to get more people moving? In this webinar, Dr. Jessica Matthews, DBH, MS, NBC-HWC will discuss the science and art of effectively collaborating with patients to make and sustain meaningful lifestyle changes.

Learning Objectives:
1. Differentiate between physical activity and exercise.
2. Examine current physical activity guidelines.
3. Evaluate the role of physical activity and exercise in the prevention and treatment of chronic diseases.
4. Apply evidence-based behavior change skills and approaches to empower patients to engage in and adhere to a regular routine of exercise.

Did you know there is a whole month of the year dedicated to celebrating whole grains?? This month we are highlighting Farro as our superfood of the month! No we don’t mean the Egyptians, but rather the nutrient dense, highly satiating whole grain! Last we served samples of a farro, tomato and arugula salad as well as a farro chicken and gravy dish while we heard from Talia Cohen, a registered dietitian on the topic of using nutrition in diabetes management and prevention, common nutrition myth busting, and the Mediterranean diet.

We learned so much about the critical role physicians can play in their patient’s nutritional practices and the importance of of knowing when physicians should refer their patients to dietitians!

Excited to announce the winners of the Step Challenge! Thank you again to everyone who participated! Both LMIG and the Wellness Committee created this challenge in order to emphasize the importance of maintaining regular physical activity, especially in the setting of a busy schedule. We were amazed to see how many steps everyone walked over the past 2 weeks! Regular exercise has a number of benefits including improvements in mood, sleep, and energy amongst many others. It's important to realize that a goal of walking around 10,000 steps a day can help keep us all in better health!
