SCA Training in the Adirondacks

Fourteen crew members of the SCA Adirondack Corps recently completed Game of Logging Levels 1 and 2 under the teaching of NEWT instructors David Birdsall, Kyle Brennan, and one of our newest team members, John Harmer. It was a great couple of days of training!

Celebrating the 2026 Champions of the Game of Logging Technical School Competition

On May 8, 2026 teams of students from 9 Technical Career Centers across Vermont traveled to Newport VT to compete in the Annual Game of Logging Technical School Competition. Three students from each school tested their skills in events such as Speed Cut, Precision Stump, Bore Cut, and Springpoles. Students with the top five individual scores then went on to compete for first prize in the tree felling event.

Congratulations to team champion Hartford Area Technical and Career Center members Lydia Dickey, Connor McKenney, Colin Myers, and Instructor Dan Gibson!

The overall individual champion is Aiden Morton from the Windham Regional Career Center. Congratulations to him and his instructor, Errold Nelson!

Many thanks to all the teams, instructors and families that traveled to participate, some the length of the state! The competition couldn't have happened without the terrific team at North Country Career Center, who organized and set up the events, provided lunch, and worked hard to make it all run smoothly. And thanks as well to the Vermont Land Trust for providing a space to hold the event.

Next year's competition is already in the works!!

At a recent Game of Logging Level 1 training in Townshend, VT participants get ready to practice fundamental tree felling skills guided by instructor Kyle Brennan. The "bore post" is a great exercise for getting a low-stakes exposure to boring into the tree and setting the thickness of the hinge. The training was sponsored by Vermont Coverts.

From Vermont Family Forests in Bristol VT: Although our Basic Use and Safety, Level 1, and Level 2 courses are full, we have a few spaces left in Level 3 on May 7. If you have completed Levels 1 & 2, you can take Level 3. In it, you’ll learn how to deal with significant lean when felling trees and how to fell difficult and hung-up trees. Cost for the full-day workshop is $250. Please help spread the word!

Mary Beth, John Adler's wife here. It is with a broken heart and much sadness that we share this news with you all.

On Saturday, Nov. 8, John suffered a massive heart attack. Despite valiant efforts by the Chester Ambulance Service, Springfield Hospital Emergency Department, and the cardiology teams at Dartmouth Medical Center and Tufts Medical Center, he was not able to recover. He went home to be with Jesus on Nov. 15.

It has been a huge shock to all who knew him. There was no warning, no symptoms that anything was wrong. But God knew and has already lavished our family with love and support beyond measure.

Thank you to all who have reached out to us. His death has left a crater-sized hole in many hearts, but my faith assures me that we will be together in Heaven again one day.

John Adler, 64, of Chester, VT, passed away unexpectedly at Tufts Medical Center in Boston, MA on November 15, 2025. Born in Perth Amboy, NJ on January 12, 1961, John was raised in Berwick, Maine and graduated from Noble High School. He went on to receive an Associates Degree in
