Last weekend, the Middlebury Debate Society sent debaters and judges to compete in the Vanderbilt IV — our first in-person tournament in two years!

Patrick and his hybrid partner from Davidson made it to novice finals, and Patrick was second novice speaker at the tournament! Both David and Brian as well as Aidan and Atiyk made it to a novice bubble round.

All had a wonderful time, and Middlebury Debate is looking forward to attending more in-person tournaments this semester!

Over the past weekend, the Middlebury Debate Society sent a contingency to Cornell to compete in the Tournament of Love (Cornell IV), Novice Nationals, and CHIDO. They all had a lovely time and did really well in the competitions.

In Novice Nationals, both Florence Wu & Steven Zheng and Cooper Mills & Matt Goodman broke to quarterfinals and then advanced on to semifinals. Congrats to both teams for doing so well!

In the Open, Justin Cooper & Adam Cooper (his Vassar hybrid) made it to a bubble round and just missed the break on speaker points.

Laura Rivera, Kasey Mazzone and Rigo Cuxil were all able to compete and debate in Spanish at CHIDO to represent Middlebury, and all did well also.

And Cynthia Chen and Colin Lyman judged in-rounds for the IV, and did a good job doing so.

All in all, a good turnout for Middlebury!

Over this past semester (fall and j-term), the Middlebury Debate Society had the opportunity to compete at a wide range of tournaments and events.

In September, we competed at the Bard IV. In October the team traveled to Boston to compete at the Harvard APDA Motions tournament. In November, Midd sent a contingency to Oxford and Cambridge respectively to compete, and to McGill to compete at the BP Championships.

The Middlebury Debate Society also had the pleasure to compete and judge at the World Universities Debating Championships at Assumption University in Thailand, where we had the pleasure to meet up with a Midd Debate alum IAing. And lastly, we attended the Berkeley IV this pst weekend to finish out j-term.

With abroad members back, a new board and some great new novices, we look forward to a strong spring semester!
