🎷MCMC Faculty Feature: Kate Forman - clarinet, sax, piano🎷

I believe that music can and should be accessible to anyone who wants to play an instrument, whatever their level. With that in mind, I always try to meet each student where they are individually, balancing fundamentals of technique and the physicality of the instrument with playing music that is engaging and fun. In all of my lessons and classes I endeavor to create an environment where my students feel comfortable and supported, while hopefully being challenged at the same time. I encourage students to stretch their comfort zones, even a little, by trying out music and techniques that are new to them, while also making sure to leave room for music that they know and love!

🍁October Blog: What helps someone grow into their fullest expression?🍁

In this month’s blog, “Music is About People, It’s About Us,” MCMC Founder & Executive Director Sadie Brightman reflects on extraordinary musicians, developing talent, the importance of curiosity, and what can happen when teachers and communities learn to notice and nurture what is already there. Because music isn’t only about developing skill. It gives us opportunities to take risks, to express something fully, and to show other people how much we care. “When we watch a musician absorbed in their own performance, we see someone who has dared to care out loud.”

🎻 Elsie & Ethan at Notte — A Benefit Concert for Middlebury Community Music Center

Middlebury Community Music Center invites you to an intimate evening of live music with acclaimed folk duo Elsie & Ethan on Friday, October 16 at 7pm at Notte in downtown Middlebury.

🎶 New England songsters and tunesmiths Elsie Gawler and Ethan Stokes Tischler bring traditional and original folk music to life, drawing inspiration from the musical traditions of New England, Québec, Celtic music, and Scandinavia. Ethan grew up nearby in St. George, making this a bit of a homecoming, too.

The concert is the finale of Middlebury Community Music Center’s inaugural House & Barn Concert Series, bringing extraordinary music into intimate gathering spaces throughout our community, giving us a chance to get together and celebrate the ways we can connect with music at the center.

📅 Friday, October 16 at 7pm
📍 Notte, Middlebury

💛 Proceeds benefit Middlebury Community Music Center, a Vermont nonprofit helping people of all ages experience a lifetime of joy, connectedness, and well-being through music.

🍂 Bring a friend and join us for a wonderful fall evening of music in Middlebury!

🎹MCMC Faculty Feature: Miles Donahue - piano, jazz🎹

I am a Jazz educator, composer and performer on saxophone, trumpet and piano, all of which utilize music theory. Jazz was my music of choice early on and I was fortunate to have close friends who were like minded. In my early twenties I organized a group of musicians consisting of Jerri Bergonzi, the late great Charile Banacos and Harvie S. We played on the Herb Pomeroy Show, Channel 2 in Boston, and later performed at the famous Arlington Street Church concert. My career took a new direction having developed lip problems from playing trumpet; I moved to alto sax and later tenor sax. I also took up piano. I have made 17 albums, composed more than 80 originals and in addition to the Jazz Workbook written over 18 articles for Jazz Ed magazine on the subject of jazz improvisation. I have been privileged to play, teach and compose the music I love.

🎹MCMC Faculty Feature: Jennifer Cohen - piano🎹

Jennifer (B.F.A. and M.Ed.) is a classically trained pianist. She has many years experience teaching private piano; teaching music in the public schools; directing summer music camps; and playing for community theater productions. In all of these activities her goal is to instill a lifelong appreciation for music in her students. In 2006 Jennifer took a summer course to learn how to play the steel pan. She fell in love with the instrument, and eventually started a business called Calypso Connections, in which she offers steel pan workshops, lectures, retreats and residencies. Jen teaches private piano lessons through MCMC out of the beautiful CVUUS space in Middlebury!
