Great things happen at schools in the summer. ☀️ This week the Westover School Senior Team went on our annual retreat, gathering at White Hart Inn in Salisbury, Connecticut to rest, restore, and reset. We reviewed a remarkable year, set our sights on the one ahead, and strengthened our collective leadership, recommitting together to a school culture anchored in authenticity, gratitude, academic excellence, and student-forward values. This is the work behind the work, and there’s no team I’d rather do it with.

To close things out, I handed out a few official trophies, my own small tribute to the fortitude, resilience, and grit this team brings every single day, because a little humor and joy go a long way in leading school communities together.

Something extraordinary is happening in the wilderness of Quebec 🇨🇦

Four Westover School students just arrived at the Kenauk Institute and I got to be there for day one. Watching them get ready for their first day of field research was everything.

This week, Westover’s junior interns are shadowing university researchers in the field: tracking loons across remote lakes, identifying bird songs at dawn, counting bats at dusk, tracking beetles, and learning to spot milfoil, the invasive aquatic plant quietly threatening native ecosystems, before it takes hold. Ariel ‘28 said she is most excited for snorkeling in the lake to observe and track bass fish eggs. They are literally and figuratively jumping in with both feet!

This is what WISE and looks like in the wild, elevating changemakers in science research and environmental sustainability. Thank you to Doug and Mari Harpur for welcome Westover students to Kenauk for over five years!

The Kenauk Institute’s Scientific Research Internship puts young scientists into real field research. University interns manage their own projects, collect data across multiple ongoing studies, and contribute to conservation biology in one of Canada’s most ecologically rich landscapes. Our Westover students are right alongside them, learning what it means to be a scientist not from a textbook, but with a front row seat sleeping in the wilderness and rising with the sun at dawn.

I can’t wait to hear about all their adventures when they return to campus later this summer.

Westover School Head of School Book Talk just got ten times better. I am thrilled to announce that I have a new co-host! History Department Chair Dr. Hannah Higgin will be joining me and New York Times bestselling author Marjan Kamali to discuss The Lion Women of Tehran on Wednesday, June 3 at 7:00 PM ET.

Dr. Higgin and Westover's history department teach the history of Iran and the Middle East to our 9th and 10th graders. I am excited for the insights and perspectives she will bring to this conversation.

The Lion Women of Tehran follows two girls from opposite sides of society whose lives become bound together across decades of love, loss, and revolution in Iran. The blizzard is here… Virtual learning or a snow day? ❄️🛷

After one of the coldest, snowiest (and dare I say longest) winters in New England in over a decade, it’s time to embrace the snow and opt outside.

When the forecast says “virtual learning day”… but the students (and teachers) at Westover School say otherwise, we listened. After careful consideration — and a very persuasive argument from our Student Heads of School — we’ve made it official:

Get outside.
