A retired wind turbine blade doesn't necessarily have to become landfill waste.
Researchers associated with Georgia Tech have demonstrated how a large composite wind-turbine blade can be repurposed as structural infrastructure. One approximately 7,000-pound blade was transformed into a roughly 50-foot pedestrian bridge in an Atlanta-area park.
Wind turbine blades are difficult to recycle because they are made from strong, lightweight composite materials designed to survive decades of mechanical loading.
Instead of breaking the material down into lower-value products, structural reuse keeps much of the blade's existing strength intact.
The concept also demonstrates a potential pathway for dealing with the growing number of turbine blades reaching the end of their service lives.
Repurposing isn't practical for every retired blade or every location, and structural safety requires engineering assessment. But projects like this show that yesterday's renewable-energy equipment could become tomorrow's infrastructure.
