The Bread Loaf School of English () may be famous for their summers, but did you know that the school also offers a weekend of professional development for educators in the winter?

The BLSE Winter Institute brings together teachers from all over to engage in their practices in both the classroom and beyond.

BtP Program Associate Madison Middleton (.of.dragons.and.trees) led institute-wide workshops throughout the weekend to create community, stimulate discussion, and deepen participants’ connection to this year’s central question, “How do we expand the English classroom?”

HAPPY NEW YEAR! We’re starting 2026 off right. Beyond the Page is thrilled to co-sponsor a residency with renowned theatre-artist and activist Michael Rohd this week at Middlebury College. During a workshop series last summer, we experienced firsthand Michael’s profound ability to bring artistry and civic imagination into the same conversation. We would love to share his impact with you all.

WOW! October proved to be a thrilling whirlwind for the Beyond the Page team. When we aren’t running the room, we try (emphasis on try!) to capture photos of our engagements. Here are some of our favorites from this year’s spooky season!

1-2: Our annual performance of La LLorona for the Día de los Mu***os Celebration on the Middlebury College campus and at St. Peter’s Catholic Church in Vergennes. Starring our amazing Teaching Artist Fellows!

3: Our visit with the Día de los Mu***os Celebration class and organizational team to brainstorm potential event partners.

4-5: Our engagement with Professor Melissa Hammerle’s first-year seminar, Models of Contemplative Education. We explored what it means to feel lost and how to navigate the unknown.

6: Representing Beyond the Page at the Inauguration Poster Fair!

7-8: Our engagement with Professor Miguel Fernández’ class, Hispanic Performance Studies. We worked with these students to build their vocal and physical skills as actors in preparation for their production of Fotografía en la playa.

9-10: Our time with Professor Ben Powers and the Oratory Now class, Persuasive Storytelling, where we helped students bring their full, empowered selves when practicing for an interview.

11-12: In Professor Greg Pask’s Entomology class, we brought the students through the performance-making process to practice creating accessible ways to communicate scientific research with an audience. There were even some onlookers from the BiHall balconies!

Can you believe it’s already October?! We’re loving the glimmering Vermont foliage and relishing opportunities to be outside.

Two weeks ago, BtP led a workshop outdoors with the amazing Climate Action Fellows! After a summer of Zoom meetings, the fellows were excited to congregate off their screens. To smoothen the transition, we engaged them in these questions:
🍂Who are you in this space?
🍂When is collaboration hot for you?
🍂What makes the work you do and hope to do as a Climate Action Fellow meaningful?
🍂When are you a steward in this work?
We told stories, we moved our bodies, and we got to know each as we launched into the semester!

Last Thursday, BtP reunited with our amazing undergraduate Teaching Artist Fellows! In our first meeting of the semester, we explored two driving questions:
🌱When is my artistry most alive?
✨What are my creative practices?
In typical BtP fashion, we answered these inquiries through movement, writing, and storytelling. By checking in with our artistic practices, we uncover our core beliefs around creativity and the role of the artist in society. In the coming weeks, we will use these discoveries to develop a foundation for how we show up as teachers and facilitators. Stay tuned!

A week ago, Beyond the Page experienced the profound pleasure to help the filmmakers involved with the What’s the Story? The Young Filmmakers’ Social Action Team program prepare to share excerpts of their films with the Bread Loaf School of English community. The day’s driving questions were “How do you want to be in front of an audience? How do you honor your authentic self and your work when you’re presenting?”

Did you know that earlier this month Beyond the Page was in SINGAPORE?!

This dream of a residency was made possible by Dr. Rabiah Khalil, who was awarded a and Change Action Grant to bring BtP to the Canadian International School (CIS) in Singapore. Craig Maravich and Shelley Fort worked across the board with students, faculty, and staff. Today we’re spotlighing their work with CIS’s middle and high school students!

Within a week, we…
🪷 Worked with the entire 8th grade (6 classes in total) using collective storytelling and movement to create dystopian stories for their unit on Dystopian Literature
🪷 Developed and led “The Creative Self: A workshop investigating your daily creative practices”
🪷 Provided acting workshops on devising theatre and personal storytelling
🪷 Offered public speaking workshops
🪷 Connected with OVER 200 STUDENTS

BtP’s been busy! ❄️ This February, teaching artists Angela Brazil and our own Madison Middleton joined the faculty of the Bread Loaf School of English’s second ever Winter Institute.

What’s the BLSE Winter Institute, you ask? For one snowy weekend, teachers from across the country converge on the mountain to deepen their pedagogical practices and develop community with other educators. Amidst workshops and events, Angela and Mads offered various ways to engage physically, vocally, and creatively, not only strengthening learning at the Institute but as a model for bringing artistry into the classrooms of these spectacular educators.
