We met up with all of our Montessori schools this morning to hear about re-opening plans. Great to connect with the creative and innovative representatives from Richmond Montessori School, Mountaintop Montessori, Middleburg Montessori School, Staunton Montessori School, Montessori School of Northern Virginia, and Green Hedges School!

Thank you to the students at The Hill School - Middleburg and the Middleburg Montessori School for rescuing apples to distribute to children, seniors and their families.

Community Service is an important part of school life at Hill School. Each year the 3rd grade class takes a field trip to glean apples to be donated to the Blue Ridge Area Food Bank. This year with the help of Middleburg Montessori School the students gleaned 350 bags of apples (10 lbs. each) – Great job 3rd grade!

MATERIALIZED ABSTRACTION
Because the mind takes in so many images, these images must not only be put in order, there must also be some sort of simplification. This is abstraction. The real materials for the construction of the mind are abstractions. They are not just images of simple objects, but abstractions of images. If this didn’t happen, it would be very difficult to do anything with all these objects. There are many kinds of chairs, for example – big chairs, small chairs, armchairs, high chairs, etc. – but they are all chairs. The idea of a ‘chair’ is an abstraction. It is the first step in the construction of the mind. It is a generalization, not an elimination. It is like algebra as compared to arithmetic; algebra is an abstraction of arithmetic. Page194
Abstract ideas can be perfect or not. Some educational support can be of great help in this first accumulation of ideas. This is why we have some material for the children that we have called materialized abstractions. Abstractions must be given in the form of objects, because this is the natural way for children of this age to learn… Page 195
