NMS Ensembles Participate in Great East Music Festival

On Friday, June 5th. The Music Department of the Nichols Middle School took 78 7th & 8th grade band, chorus and orchestra students to participate in the Great East Music Festival held at the Tupelo Music Hall in Derry, NH. Each group performed several pieces for a panel of adjudicators who evaluated the performances against a rubric, with each ensemble earning Silver ratings. The judges then conducted a workshop with each group working on improving skills like phrasing and melodic contour. Performances included "Homeward Bound" by the chorus, "Fire Star" by the orchestra, and "Lord of the Rings" by the band. Following the festival the groups, led by teachers Eliza Thornton & Patrick Converse, and supported by 9 volunteer chaperones ventured to Canobie Lake Park for the afternoon to celebrate.

In March 2026, the MHS Band, Concert Choir and Orchestra traveled to Washington D.C. Part of our trip was a visit to Arlington Cemetery to visit the grave of Middleboro Medal of Honor hero, Wayne M. Caron. Students learned about his story, his acts of bravery, and how he made the ultimate sacrifice in service to others. They also found his name on the Vietnam Wall. This was a powerful learning moment as they connected real life with history books.

Today we remember and honor all those who gave their lives in service to our country. The MHS Band participated in the Memorial Day Ceremony and played the service songs. Brayden Pittsley (‘26) and Aidan Ferreira (‘27) played taps to honor the fallen. This year had a little extra meaning as students were able to more fully understand the incredible bravery and sacrifice our service members give.

Attention MHS Band:

The Memorial Day Parade has been canceled due to the weather forecast for tomorrow. The ceremony will take place inside the Town Hall Ballroom at 10am. The band will perform and should wear concert black. Report time is 9:15am. See you then!
