Rain or shine: we move inside the FD bays if wet weather threatens. Put on your favorite tie dyes, love beads and dancing shoes. Bring a lawn chair, friends and family. The public is invited to welcome Medal of Honor Hero Garfield Langhorn home to Calverton National Cemetery on Friday, July 3rd at 10:30am.

Please join us on July 3 at 10:30 a.m. in Section 23 to honor U.S. Army PFC Garfield McConnell Langhorn, Medal of Honor Recipient, and to welcome him to his final resting place. U.S. Army PFC Garfield McConnell Langhorn, who received the Medal of Honor for his extraordinary act of valor in the Vietnam War, will be interred at Calverton National Cemetery on July 3, 2026, at 10:30 a.m. in Section 23 on Garfield Langhorn Road. PFC Langhorn was only 20 years old when he bravely sacrificed himself to save the lives of others. His platoon was on a mission to rescue two U.S helicopter pilots who had been shot down on a heavily wooded slope in Vietnam. When an enemy gr***de landed in front of PFC Langhorn and several wounded men, his fellow soldiers said he didn't hesitate - several reported he had said, "someone's got to care!" before throwing himself onto the gr***de and absorbing the blast: https://www.war.gov/News/Feature-Stories/Story/Article/3265416/medal-of-honor-monday-army-pfc-garfield-langhorn/. Join us on Flag Day Eve at the MIFD HQ rear picnic area for some pre- concert America 250 activities, flag facts and fun. Meet Betsy Ross and learn about the Hulbert Flag. Gates open at 4:30pm, music from 6-8pm. Wear your flag or Eagle attire. Bring a lawn chair, your family, friends and neighbors. Free! And you'll be home in time to watch the Knicks beat the Spurs!

D Day. Never Forget. Thank you to the Greatest Generation

Today, the world will mark the 82nd anniversary of D-Day, one of the most pivotal moments of World War II. Observed annually on June 6, this day commemorates the Normandy landings—codenamed Operation Overlord and Operation Neptune—when Allied forces launched the largest seaborne invasion in history on June 6, 1944. Over 150,000 American, British, Canadian, and other Allied troops stormed the beaches of Normandy, France, to liberate Western Europe from N**i control, turning the tide of the war and paving the way for victory on the Western Front.

We will have an abbreviated Memorial Day Ceremony at Bartlett Pond Park tomorrow at 11am.

Because there is a threat of mid-morning thunderstorms, student and scout groups should NOT attend.

Safety first always!

We'll have a pop-up over the podium. Electeds in attendance will have the chance to say a few words. We will read the Names of the Fallen, place wreaths at the eight monuments and recognize Veterans in attendance.

Bring a chair and an umbrella. At least we won't need to water the new flower pots!

Jeff's two daughters went on to graduate from Longwood

Today we recognize and pay tribute to Hospital Corpsman Second Class Jeffrey L. Wiener for his sacrifice while serving during Operation Iraqi Freedom. May 7, 2005, at the age of 32, Jeffrey was killed in a firefight after a su***de bombing near a hospital in Al-Anbar Province, Iraq.

After graduating high school in 1991, Jeffrey joined the Tally-Ho Engine Company 3 of the Lynbrook Fire Department. During the 11 years he spent with them, he spent four years in the LFD’s Junior Fire Department Program advancing to Captain. As a firefighter, he helped develop the department’s Heavy Rescue and Extrication Team and rode with the Emergency Medical Company as an AMT. He also worked as an AMT with the Nassau County Police Department. In 1997 he was elected 2nd Lieutenant of Tally-Ho and in 2000 became Captain.

After the terrorist attacks on September 11, 2001, Jeffrey joined the Naval Reserve in 2002 and took special training to become a Navy Corpsman attached to a Marine unit.
