Lake Hills Elementary School We are a magnet school specializing in STEM education in the Michigan City Area Schools district. Pages are maintained and moderated by our Communications Team.

📏🧂📦 Unit Conversions in Action! 📦🧂📏

This week our 6th graders took math off the page and put it into their hands as they explored real-world unit conversions!

One of the trickiest concepts for students is understanding that when we measure the same amount, a larger unit means we need fewer units, while a smaller unit means we need more units. Sometimes you just have to see it—and experience it—for it to make sense!

Students rotated through five hands-on stations where they:

🔹 Compared filling boxes with cubic-inch cubes and cubic-centimeter cubes
🔹 Explored gallons, quarts, and liters by measuring and pouring liquids
🔹 Measured a long classroom counter using rulers and meter sticks
🔹 Measured everyday objects and compared their mass using grams, ounces, and pounds
🔹 Used teaspoons of salt and a graduated cylinder to explore the relationship between teaspoons and milliliters

It was definitely an eye-opening experience! Students were able to see firsthand why the number changes when the unit of measurement changes—even though what they are measuring may stay the same.🦁❤️📐

🎤 Join us on Wednesday, September 23 at Edgewood Elementary School for MCAS Community Meeting #3 about the 2026 Operational Referendum. This is an opportunity to learn more about how Indiana school funding works, the impact of property tax caps on Michigan City Area Schools, and what the referendum would support.

📢 Saturday, September 16 is National School Parent Group Day. Thank you to all our Parent Teacher groups for everything you do for our schools!

🎃 Calling all local businesses and organizations! We are looking for sponsors to attend our Wolfie's Night Out: Trick or Treat at Ames to set up a table and pass out candy!
