September at MIFA is full of opportunities.

New exhibitions open this month. Alongside them, four open calls invite artists, curators, printmakers, and sculptors to become part of what we are building here.

And if you've been thinking about studying, this is the month to start. New workshops, ongoing Atelier enrollment, and the chance to learn directly from artists who are actively exhibiting, researching, and growing inside the same building where you'd be working.
This is what MIFA looks like when everything is moving at once.

Six weeks. One character. One painting, built from the first mark to the final brushstroke.

Portrait Narratives is a new workshop at MIFA designed for painters who want to go beyond technique and into storytelling. Working from a live model with costume, light, and symbolism, you'll build a complete portrait narrative in classical oil, from the first drawing to the final glazes.

This is not a typical painting class. It's a sustained creative experience rooted in classical observation, built around a single character brought to life over six weeks.

No algorithm can mix color the way your eye sees it. No software can feel the weight of a brush on canvas. No AI can build the kind of hand-eye understanding that comes from hours of sustained observation and practice.

That is exactly what we teach at MIFA.

Classical drawing. Oil painting. Figure work. Still life. The foundational skills that have defined serious artistic practice for centuries and that no technology will ever be able to replicate, because they live in the body, not in a machine.

In a world where AI is generating images by the millions, the artists who know how to truly make something with their hands, their eye, and their judgment are the ones who will always stand apart.

Don't just consume art. Learn to make it.

Every artist who has seen a Pre-Raphaelite work up close knows that feeling: a beauty that seems almost impossible to match, a luminosity that feels like it belongs to another level of skill entirely.

That voice telling you that you'll never achieve that kind of color, that depth, that atmosphere. That your technique will always fall short of masters who seem to have captured something beyond your reach.

That feeling doesn't mean you lack talent. It means you lack the method — and that is exactly what this workshop is for.
Through a guided master copy, Elkin Cañas teaches you the style, aesthetics, and complete technique of the Pre-Raphaelite Brotherhood. This is not theory. It's the chance to build, with your own hands, the kind of beauty you've only admired from a distance.

Something major is coming to Miami. And it starts at MIFA.

We are proud to present the Miami Fiber Triennial 2026 — a city-wide celebration of contemporary textile and fiber art, presented by MIFA in collaboration with FAMA and Threading the City.

At MIFA, we open 8 simultaneous exhibitions spanning our galleries, printshop, outdoor spaces, and residency rooms — featuring artists from across the United States, Latin America, and Europe. Live performances. Artist talks. Family days. All free. All open to everyone.

And then the city takes over.

From Wynwood to Coral Gables to North Miami Beach — the Triennial extends across Miami through a satellite program of exhibitions, activations, film screenings, community workshops, and outdoor interventions at P71, Red Thread Studios, Mundo Arte Gallery, and Outer Space.

This is not just an art event. It is a question asked in thread, in weave, in stitch: What is America made of — and who made it?
Presented during the 250th anniversary of the United States, the Miami Fiber Triennial 2026 turns away from official history and toward the intimate, material, and embodied narratives that actually hold a nation together.

Opening Night: June 11, 2026 · 6–9 PM
On view: June 11 – July 24, 2026
Free admission

Supported by Miami-Dade County, the State of Florida, the National Endowment for the Arts, and the Knight Foundation.
