Learning extends beyond the classroom walls.

At four years old, the playground offers another context for children to think, connect, and wonder. As they play, they notice what is happening around them, the sounds of the city, buildings rising, movement, and changes in the world just beyond our school.

And they notice together. Conversations between friends allow children to exchange ideas, listen to different perspectives, build relationships, and make meaning alongside one another.
•
These everyday encounters can spark questions and theories that children return to, represent in different ways, and even become the beginning of a classroom project. We recognize that every space holds possibilities for meaningful learning. Our classrooms, playground, school, and surrounding city are all part of the children’s learning journey.

Exposure to different graphic tools expands the ways children can express and represent their ideas. In this moment, she is strengthening fine-motor control and hand-eye coordination that will support writing, while learning to compare, make predictions, test ideas, and make intentional choices.

Behind these moments is an educator who has thoughtfully considered the materials, the environment, the provocation, when to step in, or simply observe and jot down her observations.

Our Instructional Coordinator, Ana Patton, and Elementary Teacher, Ana Mercedes Delgado, recently had the opportunity to present at the National Council of Teachers of English (NCTE) and NCTM Joint Conference in Charlotte, sharing a session that explored a powerful idea: writing is not just a way to show mathematical thinking—it is a way to develop it.

Their presentation, Write It to Understand It, challenged the traditional view of writing in math by showing how journals, explanations, arguments, and reflections help students organize ideas, justify strategies, make connections, and deepen conceptual understanding. When students write about mathematics, they make their reasoning visible, not only for their teachers, but for themselves.

At KLA Academy, we believe learning happens when students are given opportunities to think deeply, communicate meaningfully, and reflect on their own thinking. We are proud to see our educators contributing to national conversations about innovative teaching and learning.

One of our babies in the Nido class recently took her very first steps. Her teachers were there to witness those first steps in the classroom and, just as importantly, to capture and share that special moment with her family.
•
Now, watching her walk freely through the playground, with one of her teachers close by, we see so much unfolding: growing confidence, independence, new discoveries, and a whole new way of experiencing the world around her.
•
These are the moments that make the partnership between school and home so meaningful. We feel incredibly honored to walk alongside our children and families through these precious years, sharing in the milestones, the growth, and the moments they will remember forever.
