Opening its doors to future talent, the Miami Fashion Institute transformed an open house into a profound masterclass on the art of fashion illustration. Under the guidance of renowned artist Renato Armijo, prospective students learned to translate the natural curves of the human body into the classic design mannequin. It was an inspiring invitation for emerging creatives to witness exactly where visionary design begins—grounded not just in fabric, but in the deep understanding of the human silhouette.

Through upcycled denim, delicate beadwork, and surreal silhouettes, MFI students translated the complex nature of the American Dream into wearable art to celebrate America 250. Each meticulously constructed corset serves as a tangible reflection of ambition—built piece by piece from recycled materials and bold vision. It is a striking reminder that while our highest aspirations demand immense effort to realize, the courage to create them is profoundly beautiful.

Most recently, Florence curated the acclaimed traveling exhibition “From the Heart to the Hands: Dolce & Gabbana.” This extraordinary project celebrates the artistry of Domenico Dolce and Stefano Gabbana, honoring their Italian heritage and offering an intimate journey through their inspirations. Today, we are fortunate to experience this vision here in our own city, where Florence’s curatorial voice continues to guide and elevate the narrative.

The latest edition of AVESSA Magazine features an editorial on the Miami Fashion Institute’s recent partnership with Florida-based swimwear brand Montce, highlighting a sustainability workshop that challenged students to transform deadstock fabric scraps into innovative, runway-ready designs. Led by Gabriella Smith of The Upcycle Project, the initiative focused on circular design and textile innovation, proving that "waste" can be repurposed into high-quality, functional fashion. By combining Montce’s signature "fit-first" aesthetic with eco-conscious practices, the collaboration—as showcased in AVESSA—serves as a scalable model for how the industry and educational institutions can work together to promote a more ethical and sustainable future for fashion.

Julian Asion graduated from Miami Dade College with a degree in Fashion Design in 1972. He then worked in the industry in Miami for several years before moving to New York to further develop his craft.

Asion worked as the premier (master) man’s for some of the most important names in America’s Fashion Industry: Zac Posen, Jason Wu, Narciso Rodriguez, Isabel Toledo, and Francisco Costa for Calvin Klein Collection, among others.

Notably, during his time with Toledo, he assisted in creating garments for former First Lady Michelle Obama.

After decades in the industry, Asion transitioned to education, serving as a professor at the Miami Fashion Institute at Miami Dade College, where he teaches creative design and mentors the next generation of fashion professionals.

As the instructor for Creative Design, Julian oversees the final semester collections—the ultimate precursor to the Miami Made Graduation Fashion Show.

Witnessing your vision come to life is one thing, but seeing it represent the heart of your college is a whole different level of pride. We are beyond thrilled to celebrate Jazmin Stroughter and Maria Sanchez, our two talented fashion design students who took home the win in the MDC athletics design contest, a special collaboration with Adidas! Taking inspiration from the soul of the city, our winners channeled the architectural majesty of the Freedom Tower—a symbol of hope and Miami’s rich history—into a sleek, high-performance look for our athletes. From the initial sketches to the final stitch, these designs capture the relentless energy and grit of the MDC Sharks. We can’t wait to see our teams hit the court and the field rocking gear that truly reflects the spirit of Miami!
