Broward College has named history doctoral candidate Noel Hernandez as one of its Professors of the Year! Hernandez, who works as an Assistant Professor of History at Broward College, is completing his Ph.D. in History at FIU, researching the intersections of Latino identity and the U.S. music industry in the first half of the 20th century. We as a department could not be prouder!

Congratulations to 2018 FIU PhD Dr. Sven Kube, who this month won won his college's Distinguished Teaching Award. Kube is currently Assistant Professor of Contemporary History at Coastal Carolina University, and the prize recognizes his outstanding contributions to pedagogy and instruction. Kube is a testament to the FIU Department of History graduate, where he also began his teaching career as a postdoctoral fellow. Congratulations, Dr. Kube!

Congratulations to Dr. Judith Mansilla, who was awarded a Francois Chevalier Residential Fellowship at the Madrid Institute for Advanced Study! She will spend the summer as a resident fellow at the Casa de Velázquez in Madrid.

Continuing FIU History’s work as the higher education partner for Broward County Public School’s Department of Education-funded HERO grant, Dr. Kirsten Wood offered a workshop for BCPS teachers on early US history. Here’s to a dynamic year of collaboration and enrichment with talented and committed BCPS administrators and educators!

Commencement is always our favorite time of year! We welcome the opportunity to celebrate our graduating BA and MA students, and to recognize the winners of our departmental awards at our commencement reception. Dean Dinar stopped by as well to honor our students' accomplishments. Congratulations to our graduates and our award winners!

Dr. Saheed Aderinto's documentary, "Women of Fuji," Episode II of The Fuji Documentary won the Best Feature Documentary Award at the Grand Laurel International Film Festival in Florence, Italy, a few weeks ago -- the same week as the film's North American premiere in Toronto.

"Women of Fuji has been selected for six film festivals in Africa, North America, and Europe, earning one Honorable Mention and an award all within a month of its release. A hearty congratulations to Dr. Aderinto!
