As part of Hispanic Heritage Month, MDC History Professor Jorge Malagon-Marquez shares this video he created for his AMH2020 courses that show the Cuban expatriate community in Florida during the mid-19th century. The video discusses how US history wrongfully notes that the fight for Cuban independence from Spain began with the Spanish-American War of 1898. In fact, Cubans had been fighting for independence for 30 years before the US got involved in its “splendid little war” that ultimately imposed the Platt Amendment on Cuba and US dominion over the island.

The new college and university rankings by U.S. News and World Report are out Today. Miami Dade College is recognized as the number four Top Public School in the South Region and number 18 among all colleges in the South. In addition, MDC was ranked number six in Best Colleges for Veterans, tenth in Social Mobility and twelfth in Best Value in the South Region. MDC is also the largest and most diverse college in the nation. Go Sharks!
