What a night for FIU’s The Wertheim School of Music in Madrid! 🇪🇸🎶
The FIU Symphony Orchestra and Concert Choir joined internationally acclaimed guest artists, Encantus Voices, Cusib Global, and international collaborators for a powerful performance of Cantata Criolla at the Auditorio Nacional de la Música alongside our partners at Universidad Autónoma de Madrid.
Performing before a packed audience, our students, alumni, faculty, and guests, showcased the talent, dedication, and excellence that defines FIU’s The Wertheim while representing the University on an international stage.
We were honored to share this milestone with FIU President Jeanette Nuñez, Provost Elizabeth Béjar, Chief of Staff Javier Marques, and U.S. Ambassador to Spain, Benjamin León Jr.

Final rehearsals are underway at Auditorio Nacional de la Música as the FIU Symphony Orchestra and FIU Concert Choir prepare for tonight’s performance of Cantata Criolla alongside our partners at Universidad Autónoma de Madrid.

Over the past several days, students have immersed themselves in the musical, cultural, and educational experiences that make opportunities like this so meaningful, culminating in tonight’s highly anticipated performance!

Congratulations to FIU Music Education alumnus Michael Miguez on being named a Quarterfinalist for the 2027 Grammy Music Educator Award.
Michael serves as the Music Director at NSU University in Davie, Florida, where he directs the school’s contemporary music, vocal, instrumental, and a ca****la ensembles. Under his leadership, the program has grown from 14 students to more than 70, with students earning recognition through organizations including ICHSA, NACC, FMEA, and PMEA.
A graduate of Florida International University, Michael also holds a master’s degree in Voice Pedagogy from Rider University and is currently pursuing a Doctor of Musical Arts in Music Education at Boston University. His work focuses on contemporary music education and creating meaningful, student-centered musical experiences that help young musicians grow as performers, leaders, and people.

🇪🇸 Day 1 in Madrid is a wrap! The FIU Symphony Orchestra and FIU Choir have officially arrived and rehearsals are underway for Friday night’s performance of Cantata Criolla at the Auditorio Nacional de Música, in partnership with la Universidad Autónoma de Madrid. Featured in today’s rehearsal: baritone Juan Tomás Martínez as El Diablo. Students are also enjoying the on-tour experience, taking in the sights and culture of this beautiful city. Huge Congratulations to FIU Music alumnus Carlos Rafael Rivera on the release of the official soundtrack for Seasons 2–5 of the acclaimed HBO Max series Hacks.

Released in collaboration with NBCUniversal and Lakeshore Records, the soundtrack showcases the musical storytelling behind one of television’s most celebrated series and reflects Carlos’s talent, creativity, and years of dedication to his craft!

Congratulations to FIU’s Wertheim School of Music jazz bass student Anier Gonzalez, recipient of the Harvey J. Burstein Legacy Scholarship, the top scholarship award presented through the South Beach Jazz Festival and Power Access initiative.

Latin Grammy-winning artist, activist, and honoree Yotuel Romero brought a powerful and intimate performance to FIU’s Champion of Freedom Dinner & Celebration last night, where several students and alumni from FIU’s Wertheim School of Music joined him on stage for “Patria y Vida,” his anthem for the Cuban people. 🇨🇺🎶

Yotuel Romero received the Beacon of Freedom Award for his continued advocacy for freedom through music and culture.

As the nation approaches America250, moments like these highlight the impact of the arts at FIU, bringing together music, culture, and freedom of expression through performance.
