Homeschooling offers the freedom to personalize education—and it doesn’t stop at high school! Colleges across Florida and the U.S. actively welcome homeschoolers, and your student may qualify for thousands in scholarships, including Florida Bright Futures.
1. Create a Strong Academic Plan (Grades 9–12)
Florida colleges expect a solid transcript with:
- 4 years of English (Literature, Writing, Grammar)
- 4 years of Math (Algebra 1 & 2, Geometry, Precalculus or higher)
- 3–4 years of Science (Biology, Chemistry, etc.)
- 3 years of Social Studies (U.S. History, World History, Government & Economics)
- 2–3 years of Foreign Language (same language)
- Electives like Business, Art, Coding, Personal Finance
Add rigor with:
- Dual enrollment (through local state colleges or FLVS Flex)
- AP Exams or CLEP tests
- Online enrichment (Khan Academy, Outschool, edX)
2. Keep Excellent Records
You’re the school administrator—be ready to provide:
- A professional-looking transcript (include credits, GPA, grading scale)
- Course descriptions for each subject
- Optional portfolio with work samples or reading lists
3. Applying to College: You’ve Got Options!
Florida colleges like FSU, UF, UCF, FIU, and Miami Dade College are homeschool-friendly!
Include with applications:
- Transcript & GPA
- SAT or ACT scores (strongly recommended, especially for scholarships)
- Personal statement/essays
- Recommendation letters (from tutors, co-op teachers, mentors)
- Homeschool affidavit or parent statement (some colleges request this)
4. Bright Futures & Other Scholarships
Florida homeschool students ARE eligible for:
- Bright Futures (based on GPA & test scores – requires detailed transcript + 100 volunteer hours!)
- Florida Student Assistance Grant (FSAG)
- Benacquisto Scholarship (for National Merit Finalists)
- HSLDA Compassion Grants
- Private scholarships through Fastweb.com, GoingMerry.com, and others
