Federal judge Sergio Moro, in charge of of the case known as Operação Lava Jato, will be giving this year’s keynote address at the Third Annual Conference on the Fight Against Corruption and Impunity to be held at FIU College of Law.
The event is on Wednesday, April 18, 2018 in the Large Courtroom (RDB 1000).
This year’s conference will gather a number of practitioners and public officials from different parts of the world and high-ranking representatives of the governments of Argentina, Peru, Ecuador, Brazil, Guatemala and El Salvador, among others. Since our inaugural event in 2016, the FIU annual conference has become a key forum for anti-corruption leaders from around the world to meet to discuss and analyze the anti-corruption movement’s recent successes, as well as the challenges that remain. This year’s program will focus on recent anti-corruption developments and hot topics, including, civil asset recovery, cutting-edge investigative tools, forensic accounting developments and third-party litigation funding as a tool to even the playing field with well-resourced corrupt actors.
Attendance is obviously free and open to members of the FIU community, but RSVP is necessary given the limited capacity of the courtroom. Please, confirm via the following link: https://2018fiuanticorruption.eventbrite.com

Join the Brazilian Culture Club and the Latin American and Caribbean Center to welcome our guest speaker Professor Monica Hirst in her lecture "Emerging powers and peace mediation: Brazil's experience in the Iran nuclear negotiations".
Wednesday, April 11, 2018

GC 274
In the high-stakes world of diplomacy, emerging powers might well bring innovative approaches that contribute to political settlements and peaceful solutions. Brazilian diplomats during the Lula da Silva presidency focused on building bridges to transcend deadlocks in international negotiations. One example is the Brazil/Turkey plan put forward in 2010 to persuade Iran to accept a fuel-swap deal as an alternative to Western-led, UN-backed sanctions. That failure of this Tehran Declaration, at the time accused of delaying a final Iran treaty, demonstrates that emerging powers are still unable to overcome their subordinance and dependence on soft power capabilities. Professor Hirst suggests that the costs of this delay should be revisited in face of the obstacles imposed by the Trump administration to enforce the 2015 Joint Comprehensive Plan of Action with Iran.
Monica Hirst is a Brazilian-US scholar based in Argentina. She is a Professor of Economics at the University of Quilmes and leads the MA program in International Studies at Torquatto Di Tella university.
This event will be held in Portuguese. It is free and open to all FIU community. Funded by CSO.
