Happy Independence Day, Finland!

Finland has been part of the European Union since 1995, the European Area since 1999, and the Schengen Area since 2001. 16 years ago, on December 1, 2009, the Treaty of Lisbon entered into force and shaped the EU as we know it today:

🔹 the European Council became an EU institution
🔹 a new key EU role was created: the President of the European Council
🔹 law-making was made more efficient, democratic and transparent
🔹 the Charter of Fundamental Rights became legally binding

A Historic Day at FIU!
Last week, we had the incredible honor of welcoming H.E. Jovita Neliupšienė, Ambassador of the European Union in the United States , along with 14 European Ambassadors to the Miami-Florida Jean Monnet Center of Excellence and the FIU Steven J. Green School of International and Public Affairs at Florida International University.
🇪🇺 This was the first-ever joint visit by the EU Ambassador and European Ambassadors to Florida — a truly historic moment for FIU and our community!
We’re so grateful for the powerful presentation and discussion on Transatlantic Partnership and EU-Florida Relations, covering key topics like foreign policy, defense, unity, and trade. Our students had the unique opportunity to engage directly with these distinguished diplomats.
🌍 Countries represented included: Austria, Belgium, Denmark, Greece, Latvia, Lithuania, Netherlands, Poland, Luxembourg, Estonia, Finland, France, and Portugal.
🙏 A heartfelt thanks to FIU President Jeanette M. Nuñez for welcoming the delegation. Special thanks to Dr. Markus Thiel for moderating the distinguished panel; the Consuls General of Consulate of France in Miami; Ireland, Netherlands, and the Honorary Consul of Monaco for joining us.
👏 Huge appreciation to our amazing teams at SIPA and the FIU College of Law for making this event a success!

A heartfelt thank you to Dr. Despoina Anagnostopoulou, Professor in EU Law and Policies at the University of Macedonia, Greece, for joining us this week and delivering an insightful presentation on EU sanctions within the framework of the Common Foreign and Security Policy.
Using Ukraine as a case study, our students explored the complexities of EU law and policy, gaining valuable perspectives on how international relations and legal frameworks intersect.

What an honor! 🇩🇪🇺🇸
We had the pleasure of hosting Metin Hakverdi, the German Government’s Transatlantic Coordinator and Member of the Bundestag, along with the Consul General of Germany, for a meaningful conversation with faculty and students last week.
Together, we explored the current state of higher education in the U.S. and the importance of strong transatlantic relations. Grateful for the opportunity to connect and collaborate across borders!
