It is with profound sadness that we announce the passing of Carmen “Carmita” Diaz, a beloved former educator and administrator whose service to Our Lady of Lourdes Academy dates back to the early years of our school.

Ms. Diaz joined the Lourdes family during the 1967-1968 academic year as a math teacher. During her years at Lourdes, she went on to serve as Chair of the Math Department and Assistant Principal. In each of these roles, she shared her gifts as an educator and leader, helping shape the academic and personal growth of countless Lourdes girls and leaving a lasting mark on our school community.

In 2024, we had the privilege of welcoming her back to campus to recognize her with the Founders’ Legacy Award, honoring her years of service and the important role she played in the history of our school. Her legacy lives on in the students she taught, the colleagues she worked alongside and the school she helped shape during its formative years.

We invite members of our Lourdes Academy community who knew Carmita, as she was affectionately known, to share their fondest memories of her in the comments below. As we mourn her passing, we also give thanks for her life, her service and the many ways she contributed to the Lourdes community we know today.

May she rest in eternal peace, and may Our Lady wrap Ms. Diaz in her mantle and accompany her home to the loving embrace of her Son.

Senior Taylor Lyon is advocating for mental health awareness among youth. Through Feelings First, Taylor advocates for mental health awareness among young people by using social media to bring attention to often-overlooked topics and connect others with helpful resources. Inspired by the mental health challenges she has witnessed among high school students, Taylor wanted to create an initiative that encourages young people to better understand and care for their emotional well-being.

As part of her work, Taylor coordinates events, manages the organization’s social media presence, recruits volunteers and organizes donation drives. Feelings First has led international drives benefiting communities in Cuba and Colombia and has partnered with organizations such as NAMI on service initiatives.

By turning awareness into action, Taylor is helping create a community where conversations about mental health are met with greater understanding, compassion and care. Her work is a reminder that service can begin by recognizing a need and choosing to do something about it.

In yesterday’s Freshman First Look, our freshmen participated in their FOCUS workshop, facilitated by Ms. Gloria M. Ramos ’83. FOCUS, which stands for Fostering Originality, Collaboration, Understanding and Spirituality, is a 90-minute enrichment block designed to give students dedicated time to grow both in and out of the classroom. During the session, freshmen learned how to make the most of this time by managing their schedules, prioritizing responsibilities and taking an active role in their academic and personal growth. With a better understanding of all that FOCUS offers, they are ready to use this time with purpose and build habits that will support their success throughout their Lourdes experience.

As Welcome Week begins to wind down, nearly 200 students from all four grade levels stayed after school today for friendship keychains, acai bowls and, most importantly, time together.

They created. They connected. They laughed. And they made a few new memories along the way.

It was a simple afternoon, but a meaningful one: a chance to slow down, spend time with friends and enjoy the sisterhood that makes Lourdes feel like home.

A special thank you to Ernie’s Acai | Acai Bowls for sponsoring today’s Stay Awhile experience and helping us make the afternoon a little sweeter!

Watch as students in Ms. Vazquez ‘90’s AP English Literature and Composition class put their critical thinking skills into practice during a Socratic Seminar on George Orwell’s “1984.” Through student-led discussion, they explored the novel’s central themes, challenged one another’s perspectives and used evidence from the text to support their ideas.
