When Does a Student-Affairs Official Cross the Line? 07/11/2016

Check out this great conversation starter...

When Does a Student-Affairs Official Cross the Line? In a time of protest and recrimination, balancing the goals of students and an institution can be perilous. The University of Missouri found that out when a student-life administrator turned up in a viral video.

To All Students:

Last night, many of our students came together for a vigil and forum hosted by the Black Student Union in the GC Pit. The forum provided students the space and opportunity to talk about their reactions to the death of Alton Sterling. Today, we awoke to the news of yet another black man fatally shot in Minnesota. We know many of our students as well as administrators, faculty, and staff are significantly impacted by these events, and other events that have occurred recently in our state, nation and international community.

These events cause many of us to examine the issue of racism and campus environments, and to discuss the larger implications they have for our FIU students and community members. We encourage open dialogue among members of our community. FIU administration is committed to working with our students to continue making FIU a culturally engaged and inclusive community where all students experience freedom of thought and expression.

At FIU, our diversity is our strength. This diversity allows us to engage and learn from others’ perspectives. The Division of Students Affairs has several resources available to support students and provide forums for ongoing dialogue. Students can learn about various support services by visiting pantherscare.fiu.edu or contacting the Dean of Students Office at 305-348-2797.

FIU is committed to fostering understanding and open dialogue about racism among our students and the community as a whole. We welcome your feedback and ideas as to how we can best contribute to this ideal.

Larry Lunsford, Ph.D.
Vice President for Student Affairs

The event is this Sunday, and we invite anyone to join the FIU Orientation and Parent Programs team to help raise funds for her continued recovery. Not a runner?
