// Clear conditions, hands-on learning, and coral restoration in action 🙌
MPS students in MBE 644: Tropical Coastal Restoration, led by Professor Maddie Kaufman, joined for a field-based dive focused on coral nursery work and restoration techniques.
Throughout the expedition, students moved beyond the classroom to actively participate in the restoration process. From fragmenting coral colonies into smaller pieces for outplanting, to measuring total linear extension (TLE), and planting both boulder and branching corals, each step contributed to rebuilding reef structure and resilience.
The course blends science, strategy, and real-world application, giving students direct experience with the methods used to restore tropical coastal ecosystems, including coral reefs, mangroves, and seagrasses.
