Feeding & Nutrition Tips: 4-to 5-Year-Olds

Children feel better when they eat well. During the preschool and kindergarten years, your child should be eating the same foods as the rest of the family.

Your job as a parent is to offer foods with nutritional value in a calm environment and to have regular times for eating. Your child's job is to decide whether he or she is hungry and how much food to eat when it's offered.

8 Tips for Parents:

⭐️ Offer a range of healthy foods.

⭐️ Don't expect children to "clean their plates."

⭐️ Offer regular meal times and sit together.

⭐️ Limit processed food and sugary drinks.

⭐️ The best drinks are water and milk.

⭐️ Small portions for small children.

⭐️ Turn off the TV—especially at mealtimes.

⭐️ Teach table manners.

Sleep is just as important to your children's development and well-being as nutrition and physical activity. The amount and quality of sleep we have can affect our safety, how alert we are, as well as our memories, moods, behavior, and learning abilities. Establishing good sleep practices while your children are young will not only benefit you, but it will help them for many years to come.

Have you ever wondered why it's so difficult to get kids to eat their vegetables? Not wanting to eat broccoli is rooted in a great deal of more complicated issues than just not liking green food. How we come to like certain foods is associated with many factors and is referred to as food preferences.

How Food Preferences Are Developed:
In the first 2 years of life—when learning is constantly taking place—food preferences are also forming. Most are learned, but some are innate. A child's food preferences directly affect eating behavior, which in turn is linked to overall health, wellness, and the formation of obesity.

For years now, the food and beverage industry has used this knowledge to their advantage and encourages the development of unhealthy food preferences in children of all ages through various marketing and advertising techniques.

Children Love to Learn

- Open and honest communication will create a lifelong closeness with your child.
- Routines and responsibilities will let your child know what to expect. When a rule is broken, a natural consequence needs to follow.
- As you teach your child how to be independent, you also need to teach how to be safe.
- Learning how to be a good friend is an important skill you can teach your child.
Your little one is starting to explore the world outside your home. This is exciting, but can be scary!

Children from 4 to 6 years old are:
- Beginning to develop their independence and form real friendships.
- Learning rules to more difficult games.
- Developing important life skills.

Nannies Vs Overnight Care ⁉️

The hiring of a nanny is generally considered more expensive than enrolling a child in an overnight care center.

An overnight care center is a facility that is managed by a center director and is usually housed in a commercial building. The center’s personnel or teachers possess an educational background in child care and have undergone training in CPR/first aid. This guarantees that the children under their care receive the necessary attention and are kept safe in the event of any emergencies. The center provides flexible daily and weekly packages to ensure that each situation fits appropriately.

Tips to Help Young Children Practice Brushing & Make It A Good Experience:

✅ Choosing a toothbrush. Use a soft-bristled toothbrush designed for brushing an infant’s or child’s teeth.

✅ Holding a toothbrush. If the child has trouble holding a toothbrush, try making the handle thicker by putting it inside a tennis ball. The toothbrush handle can also be strapped to the child’s hand with a wide rubber band, a hair band, or Velcro.
Toothbrushes with thick handles can also be found in retail and discount stores.

✅ Teaching the child how to brush. Break the process into small steps that the child can understand and practice. Ask a dentist, dental hygienist, occupational therapist, or early childhood specialist for help, if needed. Another way is to place a hand over the child’s hand to guide the toothbrush as the child brushes.

✅ Using toothpaste with fluoride. Use toothpaste with fluoride that the child likes and that feels good in his or her mouth. An adult should always place toothpaste on the toothbrush.

- For children under age 3: Use a small smear of flouride toothpaste (or an amount about the size of a grain of rice).

- For children ages 3–6: Use a pea-size amount of flouride toothpaste.

- If a child cannot spit: Have the child tilt his or her mouth down so that the toothpaste can dribble out into the sink, a cup, or a washcloth. Since the fluoride in toothpaste is clearly meant to be swishes but not swallowed, make sure to help or watch the child while brushing. When she is old enough, tell her to spit out the toothpaste after brushing.

✅ Positioning the child. There are many ways a child can be positioned to make the child feel comfortable and allow an adult to brush his or her teeth.

✅ Keeping the child engaged in brushing. Use a timer, a short song, or counting as a game to encourage brushing for 2 minutes.

Happy July 4th 🇺🇸🇺🇸🇺🇸🇺🇸🇺🇸🇺🇸

😴😴😴😴😴😴
Use these tips to help your toddler develop good sleep habits:

1. Set up a quiet routine before bedtime to help your child understand that it will soon be time to go to sleep. Use this time to read them a story, put on quiet music, or give them a bath. It may be tempting to play with your child before bed. However, active play may make your child too excited to sleep.

2. Be consistent. Make bedtime the same time every night. This helps your child know what to expect and helps them establish healthy sleep patterns.

3. Let your child take a favorite thing to bed each night. It’s OK to let your child sleep with a teddy bear, special blanket or favorite toy at this age. This often helps children fall asleep, especially if they wake up during the night. Make sure the object is safe and doesn’t have any choking hazards like buttons or loose ribbons. Stuffing or pellets inside stuffed toys can also be dangerous.

4. Make sure your child is comfortable. Take care of child’s needs before bedtime so they don’t use them as reasons to avoid going to sleep. They may want a drink of water, a light left on, or the door left slightly open.

5. Do not let your child sleep in the same bed with you. This can make it harder for them to fall asleep when they are alone.

6. Give it time. Helping your child develop good sleep habits can be a challenge, and it is normal to get upset when a child keeps you awake at night. Try to be understanding. A negative response by a parent can sometimes make a sleep problem worse. Keep in mind that children need the time and opportunity to find out how go back to sleep on their own when they wake up during the night.
