When you tell people you’re exploring alternative education, the first thing they usually ask is: “But what about socialization?”
Here is the truth: traditional, age-segregated classrooms are a terrible model for real-world socialization.
Forcing kids to spend 12 years only interacting with peers born in the exact same year creates an artificial pressure cooker. It breeds comparison, posturing, and anxiety.
At Miami Sudbury School, we restore the natural way human beings are wired to learn: together. Swipe 👉 to see how collapsing the age barrier changes the game for both a 6-year-old and a 16-year-old.

Yesterday was Abraham Valdes’ Diploma Defense. At our school, we chose to have this process open to our wider community: students, parents, staff from our school and others, board members, and other community supporters, both in person and via zoom. I believe it’s so valuable for us to have this variety of perspectives for the students presenting themselves. It’s also, I believe, a wonderful way to give our larger community a unique window into our school model as one of our seasoned members is preparing to blast off and is reflecting on their experiences.

If you’re exploring alternatives to traditional education, you might be wondering: what does a school actually look like when you remove grades, mandatory classes, and homework?

It’s completely normal to want a joyful, low-stress environment for your child, while also worrying that “self-directed” just means “chaos.”

At The Miami Sudbury School, we replace rigid adult control with an intentionally structured democratic community. We operate on the Sudbury model—a framework backed by over 55 years of proven success.

Here, students have the freedom to choose how they spend their time, but that freedom is anchored by real responsibility. Students help create and follow a community Lawbook, resolve conflicts through our peer-run Restorative Justice Committee, and make real decisions in the School Meeting.

This unique design creates an environment where students develop the focus, emotional regulation, and self-drive they need to confidently navigate the adult world—while still having the option to earn a state-recognized high school diploma.

“As a parent myself, I can, of course, say that parenting is about love. And, of course, that love involves a whole lot of prioritization. Where we give our time, energy, and resources, communicates our priorities - what we love and how we show that love.” In this Mother’s Day reflection our founder Christen Parker-Yarnal talks about the crucial role of parents in any model of empowerment - and especially to Sudbury schools. Another beautiful celebration with our unique community of families choosing the road less traveled of self-directed education. We see your true colors, and they are truly beautiful.

This event was planned and carried out collaboratively by students, staff, and parents through group decision-making and shared responsibility. That horizontal way of organizing together, where every voice matters and leadership is distributed rather than imposed from above, is deeply inspiring to us and sits at the heart of the Sudbury approach.

Curious about what self-directed education looks like in real life? Come visit us, ask questions, and experience our community for yourself. We’d love to meet you. Book a tour using link in bio or give us a call.

This week at school held a few examples of initiative that I find indicative of the kind of self-direction and ownership I believe a Sudbury community helps develop in young people.

Thinking of “initiative,” I wanted to sort out in my mind why I see the initiatives taken at Sudbury different from those I saw while teaching at a conventional high school. I think a lot of it comes down to intrinsic vs. extrinsic motivators….
