Today, Interim Dean Daniel Z. Epstein and Professor Ediberto Román led a discussion on birthright citizenship and the U.S. Supreme Court’s recent decision addressing the issue, moderated by 2L Alexa Crea.

The conversation examined the legal history surrounding birthright citizenship, including the Civil Rights Act of 1866, executive orders, constitutional interpretation and the role of injunctions.

That’s a wrap on day one of FIU Law Family Weekend!

We welcomed our students and their families to Rafael Diaz-Balart Hall for an inside look at the FIU Law experience. The afternoon featured tours, welcome remarks from Dean Daniel Z. Epstein and our SBA president, and presentations from our competition teams. Families also stepped into the classroom for a mock class with Professor Stone and had time to connect with the FIU Law community.

The FIU Law Caribbean Student Bar Association hosted “Carnival & the Law,” a presentation featuring guest speaker Marlon Hill, Esq.

The discussion explored the roles that help bring Carnival to life, from dancers and costume designers to vendors, as well as the legal responsibilities tied to those roles. Mr. Hill also shared real-world cases involving event organization and liability, along with the importance of legal compliance in planning and producing Carnival events.

The session gave students practical guidance on navigating the library website, utilizing study aids, and maximizing available resources. Students asked questions on efficiently searching databases, locating legal research sessions, and time-saving research strategies.
