For those who are looking forward to starting and continuing in college, here are some vital tips that will save your neck, your money, your sanity, your time and your heart rate!!

Tips for Making the Most of College
MATH
Take math at a junior college. Classes are smaller so teachers are more accessible.
Do practice problems, not just the assigned problems. On difficult concepts, you need more practice.
Don’t look at the answers on your practice problems until you have finished it. In online math, if you do not know how to do the problem, look at the example problem first and then try to do your assigned problem.
When you have difficulty, you need to get help. There are several ways to do this: talk to your instructor after class or in an office hour time slot. Sometimes this is not possible.
Another, more convenient way is to go to the Tutoring Center. There you can get an explanation and practice in that type of problem.

Realize that you cannot cram for math. Keep up with the daily assignments and do not get behind. You will do much, much better if you do. Your brain needs time to understand concepts.
Do not, for any reason, go on to the next math level if you can barely get through the first one. That is academic su***de. Just repeat the course. Then you will be well prepared for the next level.
One student wrote that it is better to do assignments before the lecture so that he knows where he is having trouble and what he particularly needs to learn.
BIG SECRET – DO NOT WAIT until you are totally lost to get help-! Get to the instructor or tutor right away and save your time, energy and grade!!

WRITING
Break down writing assignments into parts. Make a schedule for yourself to accomplish all the parts so that you will not be overwhelmed when it becomes due.
1. Decide on a topic. Write a thesis statement.
2. Find sources if this is a paper with sources.
3. Create an outline.
4. Keep track of every source. Write the citation, not just the
URL, and keep it in a file for that paper.
5. Begin writing – make a goal of how many paragraphs you must do per day.
6. Allow time to get help with proofreading and citations.
7. Allow time to complete your edits before final draft is due.

The Tutoring Center is available to you from 8:00 AM to 8:00 PM, Monday through Thursday and 8:00 AM to 4:00 PM on Fridays. We can help with all your required subjects and even some that are beyond your requirements. Our joy is to see you succeed and accomplish your very best in your classes. Don’t be shy. Get whatever assistance is available to help you complete your classes successfully.
