Gordon Center for Simulation and Innovation in Medical Education

Gordon Center for Simulation and Innovation in Medical Education The Gordon Center at the University of Miami is a world leader in healthcare simulation education & research. We also train U.S.

The center annually trains 20,000 first responders & front-line clinical providers spanning from FL, the U.S., and 60+ countries globally. The Gordon Center is a 34,000 square foot state of the art facility with the capability for simulation and computer design engineering, production, and manufacturing. It houses a high technology auditorium, self learning laboratory, standardized patient training area, actual fire rescue vehicle, an automobile for extrication of trauma patient scenarios, hazardous materials decontamination corridor and showers, and a mock emergency department. The most long-standing example of our creative work is Harvey®, the Cardiopulmonary Patient Simulator. First introduced in 1968, it simulates essentially any cardiac disease, including blood pressure, breathing, pulses, heart sounds and murmurs. The patented Harvey® also simulates lung disease, is more portable and costs less. A curriculum for nurses has been developed and successfully evaluated in a study at multiple nursing schools. Harvey® trains tens of thousands of learners worldwide. UMedic® began over 30 years ago, is among the most advanced multimedia computer teaching systems in all of medical education, and web-based versions are now being implemented. It provides a comprehensive cardiology curriculum for medical, nursing and physicians assistant students, physicians and nurses, and programs have been developed in neurology and emergency medicine. Over 400 medical centers worldwide currently use Harvey® and/or the UMedic® system in their training programs. Our Pre-Hospital and Healthcare Skills Training Programs also began over 30 years ago. They now train thousands of course registrants per year at over 680 agencies in Florida and 800 in other states, as well as internationally. Courses include cardiac life support, trauma, pediatrics, stroke, heart attack, advanced airway and hazardous materials management. Paramedics diagnose problems using actors to play the role of patients. Important initiatives are The Emergency Response to Terrorism and Disasters for First-Responders, for which we are the designated lead training center for the Florida Department of Health and for the Miami Urban Area Security Initiative. Our curricula are disseminated to Florida's Community Colleges, and the paramedics trained at our Center respond to the 911 calls of millions of Floridians. We’re closing out our Healthcare Simulation Week fellow spotlight series with Dr. Vivian Obeso!

Simulation first found Dr. Obeso during her residency, beginning a journey that would later bring her to the Gordon Center and help shape her career as a medical educator.

Today, that journey continues as she explores new ways to advance simulation, assessment, and learning.

Swipe through to read, in her own words, how simulation found her, the impact of her Gordon Center fellowship and where her work is taking her today.

Our Healthcare Simulation Week fellow spotlight series continues!

Today, we’re introducing you to Dr. Ross Scalese!

For Dr. Scalese, simulation first found him during his time in the U.S. Air Force — an early experience that would ultimately help shape his professional path.

His journey later brought him to the Gordon Center, where his fellowship further strengthened his expertise and connection to the field.

Swipe through to read, in his own words, how simulation found him, the impact of his fellowship and his journey coming full circle as he leads the center's Research Fellowship program. In this role, Dr. Scalese is helping prepare the next generation of healthcare simulation leaders.

It’s Healthcare Simulation Week!

This year’s theme, “How Simulation Found Me,” gives us an opportunity to celebrate the leaders whose careers have been shaped by simulation—and the experiences that helped shape their path.

Since the early 2000s, the Gordon Center's Simulation Education and Research Fellowship has welcomed physicians and healthcare professionals from around the world for an immersive experience of training in simulation-based education and medical education science. Throughout the week, the Gordon Center will spotlight former fellows who trained with us and have gone on to advance simulation in their own careers.

We asked each of them three questions about their journey. Follow along this week as we share their stories and celebrate the leaders advancing the field of healthcare simulation. Today we introduce you to Dr. Samia Medeiros Barbar!

Today marks the 25th anniversary of September 11, 2001. Today, the pauses to remember the lives lost and to honor the first responders whose courage brought hope amid unimaginable tragedy.

We hold in our hearts the families whose lives were forever changed and the countless individuals who answered the call to serve, on that day and in the years that followed.

May their bravery, compassion, and selflessness continue to guide and inspire us.

We remember. We honor. We will never forget.

Building Confidence. Enhancing Competence. Ensuring Patient Safety.

At the Gordon Center, simulation-based assessment is more than a measure of current performance; it is a key component of quality improvement initiatives designed to strengthen patient safety.

As part of a University of Miami and Jackson Health System quality improvement initiative, Surgical Critical Care Fellows recently participated in a baseline assessment of Central Venous Catheter (CVC) placement. The assessment evaluated essential skills such as ultrasound-guided line placement, vascular access, and the recognition and prevention of complications.

By identifying specific strengths and performance gaps, objective assessment helps guide targeted training, deliberate practice, and feedback. Participants can then refine their skills in a safe, controlled environment before performing these high-risk procedures in clinical care, building competence, strengthening confidence, and supporting safer patient care.

The Gordon Center is proud to share that Dr. Samia Barbar successfully defended her PhD thesis, “Impact of a Longitudinal In Situ Simulation Program on Pediatric Emergency Training in a Cardiac Emergency Service”.

Her research explored how a longitudinal simulation-based training program can help healthcare professionals build and sustain the knowledge, confidence, and clinical skills needed to manage pediatric emergencies in an adult cardiac emergency setting. This work highlights the important role of in situ simulation in strengthening team preparedness, supporting quality improvement, and promoting safer patient care.

Please join us in congratulating Dr. Samia Barbar, M.D., Ph.D., on this outstanding achievement! 🎉
