Repost from .free.casa : “We revived an interesting question from someone recently: “how do you prevent offgassing from old paint if you rent your home/apartment? What are options for those who can repaint & what are the options for those that can’t?”

Here’s our “short” answer for ya:

1.) Paint over it. How long paints release VOCs (harmful gasses) depends on the type of paint, the surface on which the paint was used, and the climate. It’s strongest when initially drying but can continue for years after. If all you can do is paint over the existing paint, start with a sealing primer like ’s Hard Seal (linked in our bio) & then paint overtop with a nontoxic paint.
2.) Clean the walls & remove the old paint all together. The only way to stop offgassing completely and forever is to eliminate the source. We recommend hiring a professional to strip the paint because older homes specifically can have lead-based paint on the walls. After the old paint is removed, that’s where you come in and paint with a non-toxic and vegan choice!

If you can’t repaint at all, try using a renter friendly peel-and-stick wallpaper!
Final thought: if you are repainting, always choose to paint during a dry season such as fall or winter!
