PanthERS SQUAD
Florida International University’s Emergency Response Service (FIU PanthERS) System is based on a five element approach that utilizes volunteers, staff, faculty and students to provide a multi-tiered system for responding to emergencies. The ultimate intent of the program is to provide the university community a 24 hour – seven day a week emergency response capability whose chief pu
rpose is close the gap in care from notification of an emergency, to arrival at the patient’s side of Fire Rescue or other outside assistance. A key component in the university’s plan is the establishment of a student volunteer organization under the direction and advisement of the University Safety Officer composed of a diverse group of individuals interested in providing basic emergency medical services as members of the FIU Emergency Response Service - PanthERS SQUAD. The participants will operate as part of the larger university emergency response system and receive recognition, direction, training, experience, and uniforms as members of the organization. As a student lead and run organization members will have the opportunity to develop hands on emergency medical, as well as management and leadership skills and experience. TRAINING:
Support for the program will be provided by FIU’s Simulation Teaching and Research Center (STAR). Additionally, members of the PanthERS Squad possessing training skills, experience and certification themselves will be afforded the opportunity to pass along their skills to fellow members as Squad trainers. As part of the overall vision PanthERS Squad members may also be trained to assist FIU athletic trainers in their work and will be eligible to volunteer at the Student Health Services clinic assisting the staff while honing their patient assessment and evaluation skills. In partnership with Center for Leadership and Service, members of PanthERS Squad may be eligible for recognition in specialized leadership training designed to build upon and compliment leadership skills developed as part of an emergency team and earn service hour credit.
