A study by the Forum on Education Abroad found that business-school graduates who studied abroad earned on average $4,159 more than their classmates who stayed on campus, a 6.3-percent pay differential.

All students who went overseas, not just those getting straight A’s, saw a salary bump. Differentials were found regardless of program type — whether students studied abroad for a semester or just a few weeks, went to Paris or Peru, or chose a faculty-led trip or an internship in a foreign city.

With profound grief we inform the sad demise of Dr. Karl Krupp, founding member of PHRII. Dr. Krupp was a mentor and guide to many, and his leadership helped shape PHRII’s work and impact in public health. He began his career studying childhood asthma in the US and, for the past 15 years, worked in India on key public health issues affecting vulnerable communities including HIV, maternal health, cervical cancer, vaccine hesitancy, heart disease, and aging.
At PHRII, we will greatly miss his thoughtful leadership, honest conversations, and the warm friendship he shared with us all.

College Counselors Write Shorter Letters for Students of Color 07/14/2025

We talk about the importance of letters of recommendation with GHSA fellows.

📝🎓ICYMI | A new study analyzing over 600,000 letters of recommendation by college counselors shows that letters written for students at private high schools were, on average, 20 percent longer than those for public school students. Their letters were also more likely to emphasize certain details known to appeal to colleges, such as intellectual promise and participation in extracurricular activities.
The study, which focused on recommendation letters for students who applied to at least one selective institution, was conducted by a team of researchers from several universities and the Common App—the undergraduate college admissions platform used by over 1,000 institutions—using Common App data. The researchers used advanced natural language processing technologies to analyze how students’ personal characteristics, as well as the type of high school they attended, correlated with the letters’ length and the frequency with which counselors wrote about certain common themes, such as good classroom behavior, achievement in certain academic areas or athletic prowess.
Julie J. Park, an admissions researcher and a professor of education at the University of Maryland, said the research team wanted to investigate how potential bias within the nonstandardized elements of college applications can impact college admissions outcomes. It’s a topic that hasn’t been interrogated with the same scrutiny as, say, standardized testing, in part because of the difficulty parsing large archives of letters without advanced technologies.

College Counselors Write Shorter Letters for Students of Color Even for the highest-achieving first-generation students, counselors were less likely to include details about things like intellectual promise and extracurricular activities.

🌿 Exploring Holistic Healing in Mysore

We had the opportunity to visit the JSS Medical School Aryurveda Hospital in Mysore, India, where we learned about non-Western medical approaches and the deep cultural roots of Ayurvedic healing.

This experience gave us insight into a system that treats the whole person—honoring the intersections of physical, emotional, mental, and spiritual health. A powerful reminder that healthcare takes many forms, and healing can be both science and tradition. 🧘🏽‍♀️✨

Our visit to the Tamboori Temple in a small village in Hassan was truly special. 🛕🎶

This temple stands as a tribute to the Sankethi community, who settled here nearly 700 years ago and helped shape the area into what is now known as Sangeetha Grama—the “village of music.” Their deep connection to tradition, culture, and sound lives on through this sacred space.

A beautiful reminder of how history, heritage, and community are intertwined. 🎵✨

🐘✨ A Majestic Encounter Just Outside Mysore!

We had the incredible chance to visit the elephant camp located just nearby — where these gentle giants are on display for an hour each day, allowing visitors a rare, up-close experience.

The best part? For the rest of their time, the elephants roam freely in the surrounding government-protected forest, living in harmony with nature. A beautiful balance of conservation, respect, and connection. 🌿💚

🌿 Witnessing Rural Healthcare in Action

During our visit to a tertiary healthcare center in a rural village outside Mysore, we were humbled to see how one small facility serves over 30,000 people. With just one dedicated doctor and a team of five staff, every health concern—big or small—is addressed with commitment and care.

A heartfelt thank you to the team for showing us around and giving us insight into the realities of healthcare in rural India. Your work is nothing short of inspiring. 💙
