3 Feeding Therapy Tips for Picky Eaters (from an SLP + Herbalist 🌿)- Book with Natalie for holistic and feeding support for your child at www.youraldea.com

Picky eating isn’t just a “picky” problem — it’s often a nervous system and sensory problem. Here’s how I approach it with both my clinical and herbalist lens 👇

🍽️ 1. No-Pressure Exposure
Repeated, low-stakes exposure to new foods — without the “just try one bite” pressure — is one of the most effective ways to build food acceptance over time. Pressure creates anxiety, and anxiety shuts down appetite.

🎨 2. Play With Food
Touching, smelling, squishing, and exploring food outside of mealtime builds comfort and curiosity. Play lowers the stakes and turns “scary” foods into familiar ones — before a single bite is expected.

🌱 3. Calm the Body, Support Digestion
A dysregulated nervous system makes it hard to feel hunger cues or try anything new. Simple calming rituals before meals — deep breaths, gentle movement, even a warming herbal tea — can prime the body (and gut) to actually want to eat.

Picky eating is rarely about stubbornness. It’s about safety, sensory experience, and regulation.

When your child keeps asking “what’s this?” that’s actually a golden language opportunity. 🌟 Instead of just giving them the answer, try these 3 SLP-approved moves:

👉 Turn the question back on them “Hmm, what do YOU think it is?”
👉 Give them a clue describe it before naming it
👉 Use a starter sentence “It’s a type of…”

These small shifts build vocabulary AND critical thinking at the same time. Save this for the next time curiosity strikes! 💙

Meltdowns aren’t a discipline problem. They’re a skills gap. 💛

Big emotions + small coping skills = meltdowns that aren’t your fault (or theirs). Your child isn’t giving you a hard time — they’re having a hard time, because their brain hasn’t built the tools to handle what they’re feeling yet.

The good news? Those tools can be taught.

Therapy helps kids build the emotional regulation skills their brains haven’t developed on their own — so meltdowns become less frequent, less intense, and easier for everyone to move through.

Speech delay is one of the most common early childhood concerns — and one of the most important to catch early. 🗣️

Every child develops at their own pace, but there’s a difference between “still finding their words” and a delay that benefits from support. Knowing the signs (and when to act on them) can make all the difference in your child’s communication development.

In the full post, we break down:
✅ Common signs of speech delay by age
✅ What causes it
✅ When it’s time to seek an evaluation

Early intervention isn’t about jumping to conclusions — it’s about giving your child every tool to thrive. 💙
