This year’s theme, “Creating Memory, Sharing Our Voices: Celebrating 15 Years of the AADS Humanities Afternoon,” brings together students, scholars, artists, and community members for an engaging afternoon of performances, panels, and conversation.

Date: Thursday, April 2, 2026
Time: 1:00 PM – 6:00 PM
Location: Parkview Hall Multipurpose (PVH, Room 100), FIU Modesto A. Maidique Campus

The agenda includes:
Opening ceremonial performance
Panel discussions featuring faculty, students, and community partners
Live music and dance performances
A closing reception with food and networking

Program highlights include an opening ceremonial performance, panels, a poster exhibition, and a closing reception with food and networking. Featuring renowned Haitian American jazz trumpeter, composer, and educator Jean Caze and Bahamian dance educator, performance artist, choreographer, and FIU PhD candidate A’Keitha Carey.

African and African Diaspora Studies Graduate Student Association presents “The Politics of Hair and the Environment”, a dynamic panel discussion featuring Miami native and entrepreneur LaToya Stirrup, co-founder of KAZMALEJE (pronounced cosmology). This event explores how hair, entrepreneurship, and environmental sustainability intersect within Miami’s evolving climate and cultural landscape. Ms. Stirrup shares her journey leading a certified plastic-neutral hair-care company and discusses how sustainable innovation can support community health, climate resilience, and cultural identity. Students, faculty, and community members are encouraged to attend and engage in a conversation that connects personal expression to broader issues of hair, business, and environmental justice.

Your contribution will assist in meeting the following objectives: 
1. Delivering a first-rate university education while challenging and stimulating students and scholars to engage critically with Africa and the African Diaspora while developing skills for, critical thinking and contributing to the development of the field and to the betterment of communities in which persons of African descent are located, and to the cultural, aesthetic, social, political, and economic environments of these communities. 
2. Generating new knowledge through research about Africa, the African Diaspora, and their peoples and communities and by supporting original research projects locally, nationally, and globally. 
3. Exposing students and members of the local, national, and global communities to the rich and diverse interdisciplinary scholarship in the field of African and African Diaspora Studies and the histories and contributions of peoples of African descent.
