Two ships collided in a narrow harbour channel. 20 minutes later, a city was gone 💥
On 6 December 1917, the mu*****ns ship Mont-Blanc caught fire and exploded in Halifax, Canada. Nearly 2,000 people died.
It was the largest man-made explosion in history until the atomic bomb.
One ship on the wrong side of the channel, one cargo nobody was warned about.

A twistlock weighs a few kilos. It helps hold a stack of containers weighing hundreds of tonnes 🔒

In 2025, 1,478 containers were lost at sea. From 2026, every lost container must be reported.

Every ship has a last voyage. For most of them, it ends on a beach in South Asia 🚢
In 2025, 321 ships were scrapped worldwide. India took 111 of them, most at Alang in Gujarat.
The ships are run up the mud at high tide and cut apart by hand when the water goes out.
The Hong Kong Convention came into force in June 2025 to make this work safer.

Liquefaction caused 55 of the 89 bulk carrier crew deaths from 2015 to 2024. Bulk Jupiter took 18 Filipino seafarers. Emerald Star took 10 Indian seafarers.
Know your TML, check the certificate date, do the can test, and remember: a dry can doesn't prove it's safe.

In 1967, Britain BOMBED a stranded supertanker to burn its oil. What happened next changed shipping forever 💥
Torrey Canyon hit the Seven Stones reef and spilled ~119,000 tonnes of crude. It was the biggest spill the world had ever seen.
The detergent used to clean it did more harm than good, and the law wasn't ready.
The result was MARPOL, the rulebook behind every Oil Record Book entry you've ever made 🛢️

255 ships lost in 10 years, and it happened in OUR waters. The South China Sea, Indonesia & Philippines region is the #1 place in the world where ships are lost ⚠️
905 total losses worldwide from 2016 to 2025 (Allianz 2026). The Bay of Bengal is in the top 10 too.
Good news: losses are down 37%. The #1 cause of incidents isn't weather, it's machinery failure.
