Our very first student spotlight! Khadija Haider - PhD candidate.

After completing her BS and MS degrees in Environmental Science, Khadija is pursuing her PhD at RSMAS, investigating how atmospheric carbon dioxide concentration and climate change impact coral reefs. Khadija is also looking for physiological biomarkers that make staghorn corals resistant to mortality. The goal of her doctoral research is to identify the genotypes that are resistant in order to help save this endangered species.

Coral fun fact!

Every week we will be sharing fun facts - and not-so-fun facts - about coral reef ecosystems and the risks they face. Stay tuned!

You might ask, what exactly does the Langdon Lab do?!

Through the control of temperature and CO2 levels, we study how corals respond to the stresses of greenhouse warming and ocean acidification. By simulating what corals in their natural environments will experience in the next 50 to 100 years, we are addressing the global climate crisis head on.

Langdon lab is starting a chain of new experiments, this video is one part of a series of videos to show how coral reefs look when they are brought into the lab and how we process them to prepare for the experiments. Stay tuned for more updates on the experiments.
