Scientific Principles for Self-Defense Against a Knife
Physics • Biomechanics • Geometry • Strategy
Tactics.
────────
1. THREE FUNDAMENTAL ATTACK LINES
Knife attacks can be studied through three primary movement vectors. Understanding the direction of the threat allows the defender to recognize the line, position the body, and create a safer angle.
STRAIGHT — CENTERLINE
The weapon travels directly toward the body along the centerline.
INSIDE — INNER GATE
The attack enters toward the body’s inside line and center.
OUTSIDE — OUTER LINE
The attack approaches from outside or from a blind-side angle.
PRINCIPLE
Do not focus only on the weapon. Identify its line, direction, distance, and relationship to your body.
Human movement is constrained by anatomy, joint structure, and three-dimensional geometry.
────────
2. SCIENTIFIC FOUNDATION
PHYSICS
Force, momentum, torque, energy, mass, velocity, and inertia influence movement and impact.
BIOMECHANICS
Leverage, skeletal alignment, joint structure, posture, and muscular chains determine how efficiently force can be generated, redirected, or controlled.
NEUROSCIENCE
Under extreme stress, fine motor skills and complex decision-making can deteriorate. Training should therefore emphasize simple, repeatable gross-motor responses.
EVIDENCE & TESTING
Techniques must be pressure-tested under controlled conditions.
Train • Test • Evaluate • Adapt
3. THREE SPIRAL POWER MECHANICS
Power should originate from the coordinated movement.
1 — CENTRIPETAL SPIRAL
Inward
Coil and rotate inward, connecting the extremities to the body’s center.
2 — CENTRIFUGAL SPIRAL
Outward
Uncoil and expand outward, transferring energy from the body’s center toward the extremities.
3 — LINEAR / AXIAL SPIRAL
Along the Axis
Rotation occurs around the body’s or limb’s longitudinal axis, combining linear direction with rotational movement.
ESSENCE OF EVOLUTION PRINCIPLE
The body coils, rotates, expands, redirects, and continuously reorganizes itself according to the changing situation.
────────
4. BIOMECHANICAL KEYS
The body functions as one connected kinetic system.
5. THREE DISTANCE RANGES
Distance determines what movements are realistically available.
LONG RANGE — FEET
Phase 1: Footwork & Movement
Priority:
Distance • Position • Mobility •
MID RANGE — INCHES
Phase 2: Redirection & Positioning
As distance collapses, reaction time decreases.
Priority becomes:
Protect • Redirect • Change Angle • Create Space
CLOSE RANGE — CONTACT
Phase 3: Control
At contact distance, movement becomes heavily dependent on body structure, leverage, balance, positioning.
6. CONTINUOUS CHAIN PRINCIPLE
Movement should not be understood as isolated techniques.
MOVE → REDIRECT → CONTROL - Manipulation
A continuous sequence maintains movement while constantly adapting to changing resistance, direction, and distance.
7. TARGETING & POSITIONING PRINCIPLES
The objective is not to search for complicated targets.
Focus instead on opportunity, structure, balance, positioning, surround.
(Space = angle and distance.
Avoid remaining directly on the line of force whenever movement to a safer position is possible.
8. PHYSICS IN ACTION
The human body follows physical laws.
MOMENTUM
p = m × v
Momentum depends upon mass and velocity.
IMPULSE
J = F × t
Force applied over time changes momentum.
TORQUE
τ = r × F
Rotational effectiveness depends on force and the distance from the rotational axis.
KINETIC ENERGY
KE = ½mv²
Velocity has a major effect on kinetic energy.
APPLICATION
Better mechanics can produce better results with less unnecessary muscular effort.
Structure + Timing + Position + Movement = Efficiency
────────
9. TRAINING PRINCIPLES
Effective self-defense training should progressively develop:
• Timing, distance, and angles.
• Pressure-tested reflexes.
• Long-, mid-, and close-range awareness.
• feedback.
• Situational awareness before physical action.
10. UNDERSTANDING THE WEAPON
Different edged tools can create different movement patterns, but attempting to identify the exact weapon during an assault should never replace the immediate priorities of distance, protection.
For training and research, common categories include:
FIXED-BLADE KNIFE
Rigid blade attached permanently to the handle.
SHORT-BLADE / DAGGER-TYPE WEAPON
May be designed primarily for penetrating or cutting movements.
FOLDING KNIFE
Compact folding design with a pivoting blade.
Possible weapon movements can include:
Cutting / Slashing • Chopping • Drawing • Thrusting • Pushing • Rotational movement
Understanding these possibilities is intended to improve recognition and defensive awareness, not offensive weapon use.

NMS ANTI-VIOLENCE PROTECTION SYSTEM
THE PROTECTION SEQUENCE
AWARENESS
Recognize potential danger before physical contact occurs.
↓
DISTANCE
Maintain or create space whenever possible.
↓
POSITION
Move away from the direct line of danger.
↓
PROTECT
Prioritize vital areas and immediate survival.
↓
CREATE OPPORTUNITY
────────
ESSENCE OF EVOLUTION
There is no single movement that answers every attack.
Distance changes.
Angles change.
Resistance changes.
Timing changes.
The environment changes.
Therefore, the practitioner must also change.
The essence of evolution is the ability to recognize, adapt, reorganize, and continue moving without becoming trapped by a predetermined technique.
AWARENESS IS YOUR FIRST DEFENSE.
