What happens when technology meant to keep us safe becomes part of the problem?

A recent New York Times article on stalking and surveillance connects directly to ASCP doctoral student Jacqueline Perez’s research examining stalking across online environments.

At FIU’s Applied Social & Cultural Psychology (ASCP) program, students are encouraged to tackle real-world problems—and Jacqueline’s work shows what it means to use psychological science to understand emerging challenges in our digital world.

Research should do more than explain the world—it should help us change it.

A recent report on the University of Michigan’s $1.2 million settlement with a woman who accused a former university staffer of sexual assault highlights the ongoing challenges institutions face in preventing and responding to campus sexual violence.

This issue connects directly to the work of ASCP doctoral student Frank Kotey, whose research focuses on campus sexual assault and the social and institutional factors that shape prevention, response, and safety.

At FIU’s Applied Social & Cultural Psychology (ASCP) doctoral program, we encourage students to tackle real-world problems using psychological science—not simply study problems from a distance. Our students apply theory and research to issues affecting communities, institutions, and everyday lives.

🎓 ACCEPTING A NEW DOCTORAL STUDENT | FALL 2027

Meet Dr. Nadja Schreiber Compo, Professor of Psychology at Florida International University and faculty mentor in the Applied Social & Cultural Psychology (ASCP) doctoral program.

🔎 Dr. Schreiber Compo’s research examines the cognitive and social mechanisms underlying witness and victim memory, investigative interviewing, and forensic expertise. Her work explores how interviewing techniques can either enhance or compromise recall—and how research can improve practices in real-world investigative and legal settings.

Her I-LAB brings together undergraduate and graduate research on witness memory, investigative interviewing, and forensic expertise, with research supported by organizations including the National Institute of Justice, National Science Foundation, and Swedish Research Council.

If you’re interested in applying psychological science to real-world problems in psychology, law, investigations, and the justice system, Dr. Schreiber Compo may be the mentor you’re looking for.

📣 Dr. Schreiber Compo is accepting a new doctoral student for Fall 2027 in FIU’s Applied Social & Cultural Psychology PhD Program!
