Inquiry-based learning is a student-centered teaching method that encourages students to ask questions and investigate real-world problems. In this type of learning environment, students are actively engaged in the learning process and are given the opportunity to explore their natural curiosities.
1. The Structured Inquiry Approach
The structured inquiry approach is a sequential process that helps students learn how to ask questions and investigate real-world problems. This type of inquiry-based learning is often used in science classes, where students are given a problem to investigate and are taught how to use the scientific process to find a solution.
2. The Open-Ended Inquiry Approach
The open-ended inquiry approach is a more free-form approach to inquiry-based learning. In this type of learning environment, students are given the freedom to explore their interests and ask questions about the topic they are studying. This type of inquiry-based learning is often used in humanities classes, where students are asked to explore a topic in-depth and debate different viewpoints.
3. The Problem-Based Inquiry Approach
A problem-based inquiry approach is a problem-solving approach to inquiry-based learning. In this type of approach, students are given a real-world problem to solve. This type of inquiry-based learning is often used in mathematics and engineering classes, where students are asked to apply what they have learned to solve a real-world problem.
4. The Guided Inquiry Approach
The guided inquiry approach is a teacher-led approach to inquiry-based learning. In this type of approach, the teacher guides the students through the inquiry process and helps them to ask questions and find solutions to real-world problems. This type of inquiry-based learning is often used in elementary and middle school classrooms
This type of learning is often hands-on and allows students to connect what they are learning in the classroom and the real world.

One of our academic partners is the Charles Darwin Foundation and its iconic research station that has been studying the Galapagos Archipelago for the past 62 years since its creation. A couple of months ago a group of students from had an exclusive visit to the “Inspiration Complex”, the renewed marine research center in which most of the marine investigation in the Galapagos Islands takes place. The “Interdisciplinary Socio-Ecology Fisheries Research Project” provided two academic lectures on the dynamics of the fisheries in the archipelago. Climate change, sea cucumber management, covid-19 impact on the fisheries dynamics, among others, were the topics that caused great debate and reflection in the group and the same are part of the learning methodologies that RJ uses in our academic programs.

Unique facts about albatrosses!!
The albatross has the longest wingspan of all birds on earth.
They can also spend years without touching land and, given their “marine behavior” they fly huge distances on the oceans making their life a mystery for science!! Evidence has shown that they can even sleep while flying.
They also have a long lifespan for birds reaching 50-60 years old
Albatrosses are monogamous and when they find their couple after long periods, they perform beautiful courtship dances.
The only waved albatross nesting site worldwide can be found on Española Island in the Galapagos Archipelago, which is the oldest of the Galapagos Islands and is home to spectacular landscapes and incredible wildlife. Deeper information, reflection moments, and discussion regarding waved albatross took place with other great outdoors learning moments that were part of the "Galapagos academic program" that students did with Responsible Journeys.

¿Did you know that in the Galapagos Archipelago there are 11 living giant tortoises species?
¿Did you know that the Giant Tortoises' life span is close to 200 years?
With students, we were able to learn these facts and beyond.
Thanks to our scientific partners, who provided a spectacular and interactive “field talk”, the overall experience was quite enriching and unique. Anatomy, biology, threats, movement ecology, and other topics related to these incredible creatures were part of this journey!!

Responsible Journeys customizes academic experiences that will link students with the real world in order to better understand actual global issues while finding practical solutions in different fields of interest.
On these shots we can see students being part of the microplastics monitoring program at Tortuga Bay beach at the Galapagos Islands.
