So, you are looking for help with your alcohol or drug problem. The predominant suggestion is to attend meetings daily, find a sponsor, and work the steps with your sponsor. Also, always remember that you have a disease of your brain; you are not responsible for your addiction and condition; you are powerless over the drugs and alcohol, and you will have this problem for the rest of your life; there is no cure.

While this is the most common suggestion, this program or paradigm does not work for everyone. In fact, it does not work for most of the individuals who are suffering from a drug or alcohol problem and seeking help through the 12-step program. Most of the individuals who come to AA for assistance do not return. The relapse rate for people seeking help through the 12-step programs is very high. Only about 10% of those coming to AA can stay sober for any period. However, I do believe that those suffering can transform.

There is a solution, a cure, if you will. This solution involves changing your thinking. The cause of addictive behaviors is not external to the individual but is to be found in his consciousness, in his thinking, and beliefs, especially about himself, about his value and worth as a person, his self-image. When an individual can transform their thinking from a negative self-image to one that is positive, their desire to use substances will end forever. It is the individual’s negative self-image and resulting poor self-esteem that creates the desire to use drugs and alcohol to dull the negative emotional effects of his beliefs.

Transformation Counseling is not simply about stopping addictive behavior or reducing symptoms of anxiety, depression, shame, or emotional pain. Its deeper purpose is to help a person discover why these struggles developed in the first place and to transform the beliefs about the self that continue to sustain them. At the center of this process is authentic self-love. When a person believes, consciously or unconsciously, that they are inadequate, unworthy, damaged, or “not good enough,” addictive behaviors and psychological suffering can become attempts to escape from that painful inner reality. Recovery therefore requires more than abstinence. It requires learning to relate to oneself in an entirely different way. As self-rejection is replaced with self-acceptance, self-respect, and genuine self-love, the need to numb, escape, punish, or abandon oneself begins to lose its power. In this sense, self-love is not merely a pleasant idea; it becomes a fundamental pathway out of addiction and emotional suffering.

Yet Transformation Counseling does not end with self-love. Self-love opens the door to something even more profound: the discovery of our Identity. As a person begins to let go of the false beliefs, judgments, and wounds that have defined who they thought they were, they can begin to experience a more profound truth about who they are. Recovery then becomes more than freedom from drugs, alcohol, or psychological symptoms; it becomes a return to the authentic Self. It is a movement from fear to love, from fragmentation to wholeness, and from separation to connection with Source, Spirit, Higher Power, or God, our Identity. The ultimate transformation is not simply becoming a better version of the person you believed yourself to be. It is awakening to the possibility that beneath addiction, fear, shame, and the constructed ego is an Identity that was never damaged, never worthless, never truly lost, but is perfect, whole and complete.

We often try to separate what we want from what we do, especially when our behavior produces consequences we do not like. We say, “I didn’t want to drink,” “I didn’t want to use,” or “I didn’t want to relapse,” while at the same time engaging in the very behavior we claim we did not want. But our actions reveal something important about what was operating within us at that moment. If I do something, some part of me wanted what that behavior promised—relief, escape, numbness, comfort, approval, or freedom from emotional pain. This does not mean that I wanted the consequences that followed. It means that, in the moment of choice, the immediate psychological payoff of the behavior became more important than the life I said I wanted. Recognizing this can be uncomfortable, because it removes one of our favorite defenses: the belief that our behavior somehow happened independently of us.

In addiction and recovery, this distinction is profound. Lasting transformation requires more than saying, “I want to stop.” It requires becoming deeply conscious of what I continue to want from the addictive behavior and why I still want it. What am I trying to escape? What feeling am I unwilling to experience? What belief about myself continues to make intoxication, avoidance, or self-destruction attractive? Recovery becomes much more powerful when we stop treating our actions as mysterious events that simply happen to us and begin taking responsibility for the wants, beliefs, and choices beneath them. The question is no longer merely, “Why did I use?” The deeper question becomes, “What did I want badly enough in that moment that I was willing to use to get it?” That level of honesty is not condemnation. It is the beginning of freedom, because what we are willing to recognize and take responsibility for, we finally have the power to transform.
