International Day of the World's Indigenous Peoples is observed on August 9 every year across the world. This day is marked as the contribution and achievement of indigenous people who hold a vast diversity of unique cultures, traditions, languages, and knowledge systems. The pandemic has led to inequalities, disproportionality affecting populations all over the world. The day is observed to raise awareness to protect the social, economic, and political rights of the indigenous communities. As human activities are resulting in the damaging of the ecosystem, the survival, identity, and livelihoods of these people are at risk.

The theme for International Day of the World's Indigenous Peoples 2021 is “Leaving no one behind: Indigenous peoples and the call for a new social contract. “ They will organize a virtual meeting for speakers to discuss reintroducing a new social contract for indigenous peoples, where their own forms of governance and ways of life must be respected and based on their free, prior, and informed consent.

Happy PRIDE Month!

Over the past 50 years the conversation about le***an, gay, bisexual, transgender and q***r (LGBTQ+) individuals in the United States has shifted from resilience in the face of intolerance to PRIDE in a culture of acceptance. June is LGBTQ+ Pride Month in the US. It is a time when Americans commemorate the 1969 Stonewall uprising, an event that sparked the modern LGBTQ rights movement and highlights LGBTQ rights as human rights. On June 28th 1969 patrons of the Stonewall Inn who were tired of constant harassment and abuse from the police in New York City finally fought back. While accounts of the night vary, the uprising ignited a national firestorm and inspired widespread activism in support of LGBTQ rights. After more than four decades fighting for equal rights, the movement reached a milestone in 2015 when the United States Supreme Court recognized the rights of same-sex couples to marry. Today Pride Month is celebrated by millions around the world with parades, lectures, parties, workshops, and concerts. It is also a time to honor those LGBTQ individuals who have been lost to crimes motivated by bigotry and advocate for those in the over 70 countries who are still persecuted for who they are – some with the threat of ex*****on. While pride events occur year-round, Pride Month is an opportunity to celebrate the LGBTQ individuals who have changed the course of history, to promote visibility of LGBTQ individuals in the fabric of society and to continue the dialogue about LGBTQ rights as human rights and the struggle for equal rights that continues around the world today.

Happy Caribbean American month!!!


In June 2005, the United States House of Representatives recognized the significance of Caribbean people and their descendants in the history and culture of the United States. The resolution passed the Senate in February 2006 and President George H.W. Bush issued the proclamation in June 2006. The campaign to designate June as National Caribbean American Heritage Month was spearheaded by Dr. Claire Nelson, Founder, and President of the Institute of Caribbean Studies. Through the commemoration of this month, we hope to ensure that America is reminded that its greatness lies in its diversity, with Caribbean immigrants from founding father Alexander Hamilton, to journalist Malcolm Gladwell, who have helped shape the American dream.
