As a school leader, there is no pain quite like losing a student. It is one of the most difficult parts of this work — carrying the grief of a life that ended too soon while still showing up for the students who are still counting on us.

Every student who walks through our doors carries a story, a dream, a challenge, and a future that matters. Our goal is always to help them cross the finish line — to see them graduate, to celebrate their resilience, and to remind them that their circumstances do not define their possibilities.

But the painful truth is that we are not always able to graduate every student.

Sometimes life places obstacles in their path that are heavy, unfair, and heartbreaking. Sometimes students are pulled away from their trajectory by circumstances beyond their control. And sometimes, the most devastating reality is that we lose them completely.

Those losses remind me why this work is urgent. They remind me that every conversation matters. Every check-in matters. Every opportunity to support, encourage, guide, and love our students matters.

We celebrate every graduate with pride, and we honor the students we have lost by continuing the work with even greater purpose, compassion, and urgency.

Because this work is not just about graduation.

It is about hope.
It is about community.
It is about believing in students, even when life has made it hard for them to believe in themselves.
