Is your child planning to use their summer breaks to GET PAID so they can cover the cost of college themselves?

We always hear about scholarships to pay for school. However, have you heard about using internships too?

Let me introduce you to Leandra Hall, a sophomore at Spelman College that secured internships at Microsoft and Verizon during her breaks to generate over $70,000 to contribute to her professional development.

In this weekly scholarship training, I have the honor of interviewing her and her dad, Glendon Hall, a Morehouse Alum, and my mentor.

He instilled the importance of going after these opportunities to pay for school in us, and we have reaped the benefits.

At Morehouse, I got paid during my summer breaks to participate in programs that took me to California, France, and Tanzania. The money earned over the summer was put to good use during the school year.

Growing up was not easy for me. Coming from a large family with over 29 aunties, uncles and a host of cousins. My mother was the first and only amongst her brothers and sisters to go to college and graduate. I was choosing another route in the streets. By 16 years old, I was sitting in a court room facing felony charges. I had to watch my mother come home everyday and cry for weeks. It was at that moment when I saw her continuously breakdown, I knew that I had to transform my life. It became my Personal Mission, my WHY, "To put a smile on my mother's face, and become a role model for my little brother." Today, I have accomplished that mission.

You see that smile on my mother's face? She is now the proud mother of two Morehouse graduates. Understanding your WHY, your personal mission statement is the foundation for success using program. Once you have a clear understanding of what you want out of life and why, then you can work towards that goal to achieve it, by any means necessary. How bad do you want to accomplish your goals? ! Going to college was always my plan, however getting into over $150k in student loan debt was NOT! You see I thought I knew what career I wanted. I knew for sure I wanted to be an attorney, that was what I thought in high school. However, once I got into law school I quickly realized it was not for me. Going to law school and grad school and not completing my degrees put me in over $100k in debt. Finally, in 2019 I graduated with my masters in education, which Iโ€™m grateful but now I have racked up hundreds of thousands of dollars in debt. If I only had a plan. If I only used the strategies and steps in the book, written by my husband, I would have not been in so much debt or no debt at all. Many people like me end up in debt because they donโ€™t have a plan, or a clear idea of what they really want and why they want it. If you have read this far, Iโ€™m sure you know someone just like me. Maybe itโ€™s you! Share this info with someone so they donโ€™t make the same mistake you or I made.
